Our Anderson Line - English

From John Bennett Boddie:

"Anderson of Virginia and Related Families - The name Anderson occurs most frequently in Scotland and the north of England.  The first known record of the name was one Rogerus Andrewson, county of Yorkshire, England, 1379 (Poll Tax, p. 237: 1495).

Among the early Anderson immigrants to Virginia was Richard Anderson, aged 17, who left England July 4, 1635 in the ship "Merchant's Hope", arriving in Virginia and settling in Gloucester County.  On July 31 of the same year he was followed by one Richard Anderson, aged 50.  It is probable that they were father and son, who made the journey in different vessels.  Both had subscribed to the oath of allegiance and supremacy and conformed to the discipline of the Church of England.

"There can be little doubt that these Richards were the progenitors of the Anderson of Hanover County, Virginia.  the dates correspond with those whose ancestry we seek; the repetition of the name Richard for many generations, and the early appearance of their descendants in the Magistracy, councils and parish vestries, as well as marriages of the nearest descendants with such families as the Massie's, the Cloughs, the Poindexter's, the Overtones, the Garlands and the Shelton's, are strong evidence that the two Richards were the men who were the predecessors of a distinguished family."  (From Anderson Family Records p. 4-5, by W. P. Anderson.)

The first Anderson of this lineage whose record has been established was Robert Anderson, who died 1712, aged 72 years.  Land Office D. Bk. 7, pg. 272, shows a deed granting 727 acres in In new Kent Co., Virginia, for the importation of 15 person, to Robert Anderson.  the parish book of New Kent Co. shows that he was a vestry man at St. Peter's Church from November 1686, until the parish of St. Paul was formed in 1704, in which latter place he remained a vestryman until the time of his death.

Robert Anderson married Cecelia, believed to be the daughter of David (?) Massie and his wife Lucelia Poindexter.  (See notes below on Cecelia, there is some controversy as to whether there is actual proof of this connection).

Continuing from Boddie:  "Note:  The Andersons and Massies were in New Kent Co., at the same time.  "Began at James City the 10th day of November, 1688.  These following orders of publique charge and levy were made in New Kent County to Cornelius Daubney, Stephen Tarlton, Robt. Anderson, John Fleming, Peter Massie, and Moses Davis, Jurors, 2721 Tobacco lbs."  (Journal of the House of Burgesses of Va., 1659, 1660-1693, p. 180.)

About King and Queen County

Formed in 1691 from New Kent County, King and Queen County was named for King William III and Queen Mary. It is located in the Middle Peninsula of Tidewater Virginia with its county seat at King and Queen Court House close to the Mattaponi River. This location has played a significant role in the history of the county - especially during the three wars fought on Virginia's soil.1

As an early Virginia county, King and Queen has been the county of origin for many families that later migrated westward and southward. Descendants of many of the old King and Queen families still reside in the area. Unfortunately for researchers, the King and Queen County Court House, along with its records has burned twice. In 1828, the Clerk's Office burned and most records were lost. The Court House and Clerk's Office, along with homes and buildings in the vicinity, was burned by Union troops on March 10, 1864 in retaliation for the killing of Colonel Ulric Dalhgren during the ambush of his troops which took place on King and Queen soil near Stephensville and Mantapike. King and Queen is one of Virginia's "burned" counties.

Present-day King and Queen County covers an area of 327 square miles with a population of under 6000. It is a long and narrow in shape, being about sixty miles long and no more than ten miles wide at any point. The county is primarily rural with several small communities such as Indian Neck, Walkerton, Bruington, Stephensville, Helmet, Newtown, and Carlton Corner located within its borders.2

iii.

Generation  Three

ROBERT ANDERSON I, ( Richard 2, Richard 1)  was born about 1634 in new Kent (County), Va. and died about 1712 in St. Parrish, New Kent Co., Va.  He married CECILIA MASSEY (no proof of this marriage) in 1662, daughter of  PETER MASSEY and Lucelia Poindexter.

Some notes on Robert:

Robert5 Anderson  (Richard4, Richard3, York Watershed2, Colonial Virginia1)1,2 was born 1634 in York County, Virginia, and died 1712 in New Kent County, Virginia.  He married Cecelia Massie3 Abt. 1661, daughter of Peter Massie and Penelope Ashley-Cooper.  She was born Abt. 1646 in Virginia.

Notes for Robert Anderson:

According to William Pope Anderson writing in 1936, Robert Anderson arrived in what is now Hanover county between 1670 and 1677 as one of 80 persons transported to Virginia by charter to George Chapman by William Berkeley, Governor.  His interpretation of the land data at that time was limited to the index cards available at the Virginia State Library which only listed land patent holders.

However there is a patent record in 1666 that shows Robert Anderson was an adjacent landholder to Moses Davies in the delta of the Pamunkey River at the head of the York River, an arm of the Chesapeake Bay. It is very likely that Robert had been born in Virginia.  At that time any travel returning from a trip back to England would have earned you an additional head right upon your return to Virginia.  It was common practice among land owners to send their children back to England for education.

If the family tradition of "Ye Andersons of Virginia", pages 231- 288, Volume 11, Old Northwest Genealogical Quarterly, Columbus, Ohio, 1908; are correct, Robert's father may be the Richard Anderson, mentioned in mid 1600's York County, Virginia Court Records.   It is likely that additional records would be available except that after Gloucester County was formed from York it's records were destroyed in an 1820 fire and the details of land purchases along the north bank of the York River and at the mouth of the Pamunkey have been lost to that fire.

Another sources give his father as John Anderson of York County, Virginia.

See newspaper article in The Daily Progress, Charlottesville, Va. 02/26/84. Merchant Hope, ship that brought Richard Anderson to Va. in 1635. His sons John and Thomas were in the shipbuilding business in Gloucester Pt., Va. In 1645, Robert Anderson, John's son became first Anderson born in Va. He was destined to take a 700 acre land grant on south branch of Pamunkey River and turn it into 5000 acre Goldmine plantation. For more, read above article, copy on file at the Albemarle County Historical society office,  Charlottesville, Va.  I have not had the opportunity to examine the article referred to above to determine what supporting evidence it gives that this John Anderson is the father of Robert Anderson of Goldmine but this is in disagreement with at least two other authors so I simply display this record here that you may research it own your own should the opportunity present itself.

Commentary on Sources

William Pope Anderson in Anderson Family Records 1936, The Early Descendants of William Overton and Elizabeth Waters of Virginia, and Allied Families, 1938 and Anderson - Overton 1945 documents the descendants of Robert Anderson of New Kent County.  His interest lies with the family of Robert Clough Anderson of some historical fame. Robert C. served with Washington's Army (infamous at the battle of Trenton) and had a son who commanded Fort Sumter at the outbreak of the Civil War. He was considerate enough to collect and document family trees on Anderson families other than Robert's and although his text is tedious to study it contains a wealth of genealogical information. A notation in the latter volume states that copies may be obtained from "Charitable Relief Association", 203 West Third Street, Cincinnati 2, Ohio. However that reference has clearly expired. Both the Virginia and Tennessee State Libraries have had these books, although not all three.  The first and third are available from genealogical reprint book stores.

Edward L. Anderson wrote The Andersons of Goldmine, which is in the Library of Congress. It contains a family tree for the Robert Anderson family of New Kent.  It was used as a source for some of William Pope Anderson's work and he quotes it where applicable. It is the best source for family traditions.

Climbing the Family Tree by Bessie Lamar Anderson Calvert is an additional source for this family.  It contains considerable detail, particularly regarding the female descendants of the families. However, some of its data is questionable. I found this in the Tennessee State Library and the Library of Congress.

Notes for Cecelia Massie:

This is the traditional name of his wife but to my knowledge it is unsupported by record.  In fact I suspect it is an error caused by the misinterpretation of the land records associated with the widow Cecelia Anderson wife of Matthew Anderson.  Massie family researchers have been unable to connect her and alternative suggestions are solicited from researchers.

Generation Four

Robert ANDERSON II.  Born in 1660 in New Kent Co., Virginia. Robert II died in 1734, he was 74.  Robert II married __________. Born abt 1680 in Salem, New Jersey.  From Boddie on Robert, son of Robert:  Robert Anderson Jr. (son of Robert) died in 1716 aged ca 53 years.  On Oct 23, 1690 he took over the 727 acres in New Kent Co. which had been relinquished by his father.  On the same date he received 1200 acres of the importation of 24 persons.  In 1702 he appeared as Robert Jr. vestryman of St. Peter's Parish in New Kent Co.  In 1704, on the formation of St. Paul's in New Kent Co. (Hanover Co. after 1720) he appeared as Captain Robert Anderson, and his father as Robert Anderson Sr., Robert Jr., was Justice in New Kent Co. in 1714.

Robert Anderson Jr. married Mary Overton (cf. Overton lineage, Historical Southern Families, Vol. V, p. 128, where her name is shown as Elizabeth Overton).  She was born June 28, 1673, the daughter of William Overton who was born in England Dec 3, 1638 and married Elizabeth Waters on Nov 24, 1670 (daughter of Samuel and Ann Waters of London).  This marriage of William Overton and Elizabeth Waters is proved by the will of Ann Waters, widow, of the parish of St. Sepulchre in London, dated Sept 29, 1697 and probated July 1700 by her son Thomas Waters, which states:  "I give unto my daughter Elizabeth Overton, now in Virginia, the sum of ten shillings, and to my son-in-law William Overton, her husband, ten shillings".

A patent was issued (with Eban Jones) April 23, 1681 for 4600 acres in New Kent Co. on the south side of the Pamunkey River on Falling Creek, for the transportation of 92 persons.  Among the headrights were William and Elizabeth Overton.  On Oct 28, 1690, William Overton and John Lyddall patented 837 acres in St. Peter's parish, New Kent, above the main fork of the Pamunkey.

Robert Anderson Jr. and Mary (Overton) had issue:  Richard, James, Garland, Matthew, David (of whom later), Robert, Nathaniel, Charles, John, Charity, and Sarah.

Notes from another researcher, that I have not had an opportunity to follow-up on yet, but will post it for others so they don't copy erroneous data from my site:

Dear Cat,

First let me say that as a 25 year genealogical researcher (of my own family lines) I really am astounded at the work you have done on your website.  You have gone to extraordinary lengths to make sure the information you have published on the site is correct.

It is because of the attention you have shown to details that I am taking the time to let you know of one section of information that is incorrect.  The information you have listed for the John Anderson 1699-1751 that ended up in Perquimans County, North Carolina may be related to this Anderson family but definitely he is not the son of Robert.

I am a descendant of John Anderson and Elizabeth Nicholson of Perquimans County and I have positively identified his father to be John Anderson.  It is John's father's father that I have not been able to place.  The problem with my line of Anderson's keeps getting repeated because of information that was posted in the History of Perquimans County by Winslow, and while overall it is a wonderful book, it is also full of misinformation on many of the family lines.  Many more records have become available since it was written and access to those records has become easier.

I will list below the correct information so you will have it for your records and if you happen to notice where my original John Anderson might fit in, I would truly love to know.  It may be my John is a brother of Robert instead of son, or a cousin but I have found absolutely no documentation to even hint where my original John came from.  Circumstantial evidence from the names of his children is all that possibly ties them together at this point.  Sincerely, Jean

Additional Notes:

Descendants of Richard Anderson

Generation No. 1

1. Richard3 Anderson (York Watershed2, Colonial Virginia1) was born 1585, and died Aft. 1635. He married Elizabeth Hawkins December 20, 1611 in London, England, daughter of William Hawkins. She was born March 21, 1583/84 in All Honey's Lane, London England.

Notes for Richard Anderson:

Richard Anderson is by rumor and family tradition supposed to be the ancestor of the ANDERSON families of the James River. How much of this is family tradition passed down and how much was made up by early researchers looking at ship lists I can't be certain by examining the published literature. I have not seen a presentation of strong evidence of this association in the sources I have seen.

This Richard Anderson appears on the passenger list for the Merchant's Hope (owned by William Barker) in 1635 and his age is listed as 50. What happened to him when he got to Virginia is undocumented. Several writers claim he arrived in Virginia after sending his sons the year before. How many sons depends upon which writer you read. The London marriage record was added by another researcher writing in the 1960's.

Richard Anderson and his sons Richard, John, and Thomas would have settled into the area of York County, Virginia that was north of the Charles River at that time in the vicinity of Gloucester Point where they reputedly set up their ship building business. The Charles River was later renamed the York River and the area north of the river became Gloucester County. Unfortunately all of Gloucester County's colonial records burned in an 1820 county courthouse fire and then again were burned in the Civil War at Richmond, Virginia.

At this early time it is entirely possible that many of the Anderson men named in Virginia land patents about 1650 were members of this family and may have settled anywhere on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. However without evidence from the Gloucester County Court records to connect them we will probably never be able to establish the relationships.

Some sources that discuss this association are:

"Ye Andersons of Virginia", pages 231-288, Volume 11, Old Northwest Geanealogical Quarterly, Columbus, Ohio, 1908

newspaper article in <U>The Daily Progress</U>, Charlottesville, Va. 02/26/84. copy on file at the Albemarle County Historical society office, Charlottesville, Va.

Notes for Elizabeth Hawkins:

Elizabeth Hawkins is believed to be from the family of Admiral John Hawkins of Spanish Armada defense fame.
_________

Marriage is from London Marriage Book #2, Page #8. This marriage can be found in several of the files in the Broderbund Corporation World family Tree CD ROMS.

Birth is from a source sent to me but unfortunately separated from its envelope and thus lost.
__________

Another Source:

THE GEORGIANS, Genealogies of Pioneer Settlers by Jeannette Holland Austin.

It has an article on the GA Anderson family that originates in Virginia and gives the marriage of Richard Anderson and Elizabeth Hawkins.

Unfortunately my research has shown that the GA book contains serious errors. There does appear in the records a Richard Anderson born 1585. His son Richard probably did have a son Robert whose family has been documented reasonably well. However the son of Robert called James is not the James who married Rebecca Cooke as is claimed in the GA book. What happened to Robert's son James Anderson is undocumented but I suspect he went early to NC. The James Anderson who married Mary Jordan first and Rebecca Cooke as a second wife, is the son of Thomas Anderson whose family is documented under Southside families within this GEDCOM or on the web page located at http://www.homepages.rootsweb.com/~anderson/virginia.html

James Anderson married first Mary Jordan and did have a son John but that John is not the one who married Sarah Carney. Within the same GEDCOM and web page you can find details of James' son John who married Mary Bell and lived all his life in Virginia.

James Anderson who was the father of John Anderson who married Sarah Carney and went to GA is also documented within this GEDCOM and web page. I have had contact with several family members and they seem to agree based on the source of the marriage record of John and Sarah placing them in Stafford County, Virginia.

I have been struggling for some time to correct the lineage in the Georgia Pioneers book and provide the documentation in the notes of this GEDCOM to help.

Currently however I have no reason to challenge the Elizabeth Hawkins marriage and suggest to anyone investigating it to consider the possible relationships around and about Plymouth England of the Hawkins ship captains, the Barker ship owners, and the Anderson ship builders.

Children of Richard Anderson and Elizabeth Hawkins are:

+ 2 i. John4 Anderson, born 1614 in London, England; died in Gloucester County, Virginia.

3 ii. Thomas Anderson1, born 1616 in London, England; died in Gloucester County, Virginia.

Notes for Thomas Anderson:

Thomas Anderson arrived on ship Bonaventure 1/2/1634. Age listed as 18. He lived at Gloucester Point on York River according to tradition and was a shipwright.

I am trying to study whether this man may be the father of Reynard Anderson or Thomas Anderson who are the founders of the Southside Virginia ANDERSON families.

There are many Andersons of the colonial period of the Gloucester County area and it is likely that some of them descend from this man. It is likely that he had several sons and it is important to remember that at this early time his sons may have resettled almost anywhere on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay.

Although some of the Robert Anderson family claims to be descended from this man I have found no record of his descendants. He is likely the father of the Richard who appears in the 1660's in the counties immediately northwest of the York River. The records above may be his or those of his son Richard. Nobody has written much about this Richard Anderson

New Kent County was formed from the York River Watershed and it is very likely that the Richard, Robert and William Anderson of that region are descendants of this man but it is unproven.

Notes for ?:

The following researcher believes Richard was married to Mary Spencer. However, from what I have seen Mary Spencer married a Richard Anderson of early colonial Philadelphia and I do not believe these Richards to be one and the same. But I provide the note here for you to do your own checking.

Patrick -

Have I seen your webpage? Indeed, your webpage, which I found in early June, was what gave me link I needed to researching this family. <U>You have a great webpage</U>. You have worked very hard on it and I have been recommending it to other Anderson researchers.

I traced the ancestry of Mary Spencer (wife of Richard Anderson) back to the le Despencers and D'abbetots in the 11th century. You probably have this information, but I'm including it in this email just in case.

But I haven't got any further info on the Andersons. I also would love to have more on Agnes Gannaway and Susanna Bowles (she married William Hughes, the son of Willam Hughes and Frances Anderson). And the biggest mystery of them all is the da___ Cecelia Massie thing. I can't take her line anywhere, cause nobody can decide who her parents were. I've 'bout decided that it was D (probably David) and Lucretia Massie. But when you are not sure of something, you hesitate to take it further.

Now, I'm descended from this family on two sides. From Frances Anderson and William Hughes and from Pouncey Anderson and Elizabeth Holland ( Her line goes way back to the Duttons and the Molyneux'. I think I'm going to be able to connect her to the deHolands eventually.)

We should all really appreciate the research that has gone into your work, mainly because the Richards, Roberts and Williams are all so confusing. I, for one, want to say thank you for sharing it. And I also want to ask your permission to quote some of your notes in my pedigree, which I plan to print and share with my cousins. I also would like to develop my own webpage, so I can get some more help with this. Your notes speak for themselves; they are not controversial and are very honest about the authenticity of the information. Please let me know if it's alright to use them.

Notes for John Anderson:

1704 Rent Roll

Anderson, John York County 50 acres

6. Robert5 Anderson (Richard4, Richard3, York Watershed2, Colonial Virginia1)3,4 was born 1634 in York County, Virginia, and died 1712 in New Kent County, Virginia. He married Cecelia Massie5 Abt.

It is likely that additional records would be available except that after Gloucester County was formed from York it's records were destroyed in an 1820 fire and the details of land purchases along the north banl of the York River and at the mouth of the Pamunkey have been lost to that fire.

The ancestors of Robert Anderson are very speculative and there are some conflicts between several authors' publications. The first hard data begins with Robert.

____________________________________

In 1677 Robert Anderson signed the petition of grievances for Blisland Parish regarding Gov. Berkley. He was a vestry man of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent County on 11/1686; and for St. Paul's Parish from 1704-1712. However these records do not imply that he had ever moved, rather they reflect the reorganization of the parishes that were occurring at the time as the Virginia frontier expanded.

From the Virginia land patents

1666 Robert Anderson adjacent Moyses Davies at Tottopottomoyes Creek

1670 Robert Anderson adjacent John Fleming & Thomas Glass

Virginia land patents often identify the land by reference to nearby creeks and branches and whether they are above of below a river that is a branch of the Chesapeake Bay. In addition they list the adjacent land owners. These two records indicate that Robert Anderson already owned land along Tottopottomoyes Creek before 1666.

George Chapman

04/22/1670 4150 acres New Kent County

Pamunkey Neck, etc. for the transport of Robert Anderson

This reference may be from Robert returning from a trip to England. There were many reasons for such a trip including the need to see to family affairs there and for education and merchantile affairs. At this time the many landowners frequently selected a member from among them to act as an agent, who returned to England in the spring season when such trips were considered safe from hurricanes and took with him papers and power of attorney from the other landowners that allowed him to represent their interests. He would then return their monies and report to them upon his return. Such trips were burdensome and such task was rotated among landowners. If Robert was from a shipbuilding family of Portsmouth, his shipping ties would have made him a likely candidate for such a trip.

1683 adj. Moses Davies at Chickahominy Maine Swamp

1703 adj. George Aalvis at Totapotomy's Creek

According to the practice at the time, a landowner would frequently re-patent land that he already owned whenever their was a change in the royal governor. This was to assure his patent rights and minimize disputes. Therefore these records in the patents book may be referring to the same land that his father likely obtained by purchase before 1666 when this area was still Gloucester County. However all colonial records of Gloucester County have been destroyed in an 1820 courthouse fire so it is impossible to determine how these lands were initially acquired. I checked for Holly Bush Branch and Meyry Branch on a current Virginia map but did not find them listed. But these lands were in the area just north of current Mechanicsville, Virginia.

Robert Anderson signature appears repeatedly in the St. Paul Parish vestry book from 1704-1712. He usually signs as Mr. Robert Anderson, Sr., but occasionally uses a large R symbol as a mark in his signature. I would like a look at the original to see if this was a signet ring stamp or mark. He acts as an organizer of processioning activities between Tottopotomies and Mechumps Creeks in 1708 and 1711.

Anderson, David New Kent County 300 acres

Anderson, John New Kent County 100 acres

Anderson, Richard New Kent County 200 acres

From this rent roll it appears likely that Robert, David, John and Richard were the oldest sons and that Matthew and Thomas were younger and had not established their own plantations as of 1704. Notice also that there is an additional John Anderson in this list that we have not connected but whom appears to have died about 1705 according to St. Paul's vestry book which opens with an entry about care for his children.

Robert Anderson's death in 1712 is recorded in the St. Paul parish vetry book when an entry is made that he is deceased and being replaced as church vestryman.

Children of Robert Anderson and Cecelia Massie are:

10 i. Robert6 Anderson5,6, born 1663 in New Kent County, Virginia; died 1716 in Hanover County, Virginia. He married Mary Overton Bef. 1702; born June 08, 1673 in England; died Aft. 1744 in Hanover County, Virginia.

Notes for Robert Anderson:

Robert's birth date is from William Pope Anderson publications. Robert was born in the delta of the Pamunkey River at the head of the York River branch of the Chesapeake Bay. Through acquisitions his sons built the 5000 acre "Goldmine" Plantation named after a passing stream. Robert was a 1703 Vestryman of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent, and Justice of New Kent in 1714.

Robert Anderson's death in 1716 is recorded in the St. Paul parish vestry book. His sons were underage at the time of his death and his family has been reconstructed from the deeds of his wife and her sons and the precessioning records of St. Paul's parish.

otes for Richard Anderson:

Richard's existence is derived from St. Paul parish precessioning records and the 1704 rent roll. He is identified in the St, Paul's parish vestry book as responsible for the cures of two different individuals so I am assuming he was considered a doctor.

Curiously I have found no patents or deeds for him but he is listed as a land holder in the precessioning records.. He survived for a significant period in the St. Paul Parish precessioning records and it is possible that he had purchased a plantation and never moved from it. He is superceded in those records by Charity Anderson.

It is possible that his widow is the Charity Anderson listed as a daughter of Robert Anderson by Edward L. Anderson and others. He lived in a precinct defined separate from his bothers but within one plantation of his brother Matthew.

This is Richard and his father and brothers. The extra John is believed to be from another family and died in 1706.

Notes for Charity Pouncey:

Charity supercedes Richard in the St. Paul's parish precessioning rolls. It is possible and now I think likely that she was Charity Pouncey. In the 1731 precessioning roll she is co-resident in the precinct with Anthony Pouncey.

Pat,

Just had the privelege of looking at you excellent website: Everett Anderson Memorial Collection, and want to thank you and share information on my ancestor, John Anderson, c.1670-1730, who died in Louisa Co, and who you list as child #7 of Robert Anderson and Cecelia Massie.

My own lineage, in brief, goes:

1 John Anderson=Sarah Waddy

2 Maj. Nelson Anderson (c.1714-1786-Hanover Co)=unknown wife

3 Elizabeth Anderson=Waddy Thomson, Sr

4 Anderson Thomson=(1st cousin) Ann Clopton Anderson

[SEE BELOW]

5 David Henry Thomson=Catherine Mary Goll

6 Nelson Anderson Thomson=Mary Lucinda Davies

[SEE BELOW]

2 Ann Anderson (1708-1802)=David Crawford III

3 David Crawford IV=Elizabeth Henderson

4 Elizabeth Crawford=Nicholas Clayton Davies

5 Mayo Davies=Lucinda Taliaferro

6 Benjamin Taliaferro Davies=Mary Frances Shirkey

7 Mary Lucinda Davies=Nelson Anderson Thomson [REDUNDANT]

8 Catherine Mary Thomson=James Luke Boyle

9 James Thomson Boyle=Barbara Jean Simpson

10 James David Boyle

2 William Anderson=unknown wife

3 Col. Nelson Anderson (1735-1819, Louisa Co)=Frances Jackson

4 Ann Clopton Anderson=Anderson Thomson [REDUNDANT]

5 etc

Thus, as far as our family can tell, we descend from 3 of the 8 children of John Anderson. I have a fairly good-sized descendancy of these people, and have collected about 800 or so descendants of Nicholas Clayton Davies.

My main concern is the parentage of John Anderson (your John4, Robert3, Richard 2, Richard1).

I would prefer to believe that he does in fact descend, as above, from Robert, as the genealogists in my family have believed for the past century; however, I have run into a lot of trouble trying to confirm it.

Robert Anderson I had a child named John, with little said about his descendants, but I couldn't tie him into my family. Maybe you will be
able to.

In W. P. Anderson's 3 books, the major note on John is in "Early desc. of Wm. Overton, etc", p.35, and he says that Robert I's son John was born too late to have been the husband of Sarah Waddy, but I can't find any marriage date for Robert I or that of his son John.

My John and his wife appear to be the ones who were deeded land on 28 Jan 1696 from Samuel Waddy, and John's widow conveyed these 80 acres to John Thom(p)son (7 Aug 1735--Virginia County Records, by Crozier, VII:67). In 1725 he received another grant of land in Hanover Co. My working hypothesis is that he came from Scotland, and came here either before or after his 1700 marriage. One source claimed that the Thomas Anderson of co. Northumberland who established a shipyard at Gloucester Point in the 17th century, was the ancestor of the family in Virginia, and they are apparently unrelated to the Robert Andersons of Goldmine.

If you have any further ideas on John, I would be grateful for them. If you would like me to send a printout or GEDCOM on anything I have, it would be a pleasure.

Thanks again for your great website.

14 v. Matthew Anderson13,14, born Aft. 1680 in New Kent County, Virginia; died 1719 in Hanover County, Virginia. He married Cicilia Massie Abt. 1710; died Abt. 1743 in Louisa County, Virginia.

Notes for Matthew Anderson:

The birth date of Matthew has been corrected to reflect the fact that he does not appear in the 1704 rent roll and may differ from the one given by William Pope Anderson in Anderson - Overton, A Continuation of Anderson Family Records (1936) & Early Descendants of William Overton & Elizabeth Waters of Virginia & Allied Families, by William Pope Anderson, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1945. Matthew's existence is derived from a study of early precessioning records of St. Paul's Parish which associate him with Robert Anderson I.

He clearly married a Cecilia whose surname is unknown. This is determined from the precessioning records. Follow-up researchers should be cautious that the occurence of Cecilia's name in the early parish records may have caused early researchers to both create a Cecilia as a sister and to give his father Robert a wife by the name of Cecilia. Alternatively there may be some relation between Matthew's wife Cecilia and his father's wife, neither of whom's surname is firmly established. However from records that I have seen it is only clear that this one widow named Cecilia existed.

In 1708/09 Matthew acquired the lands of Capt. William Anderson relationhip unknown. This suggests that Matthew was born before 1687. Capt. William had been an early resident of Virginia in the King William County area and is suspected of being a first cousin. Matthew is last listed in Hanover land records in 1715/16 after which his widow Cecilia is listed in 1719 as land owner until 1743. Matthew therefore died between 1715 and 1719. In 1735 James Anderson precesions for her land and is therefore likely a son born before 1714. Some people list this James as a son of Matthew's brother Robert. Becasue of Matthew's early date of death it seems more likely James was a son under age at his father's death. Matthew appears to have died young and likely only had a few children. However there are still many Louisa and Hnaover Andersons unconnected so keep open the possiblity that he had other underage children at this death.

In 1719 Gilbert Gibson was given a patent adjacent to Matthew and Thomas Anderson in New Kent County. It is possible to trace Gibson, Matthew and his brother Capt. Thomas Anderson through the St. Paul precessioning records.

Matthew died before his sons were of age and as a result we have no official record of their names. I have seen no will for him.

If Bartelot was a son of Matthew then it is sure that Matthew also had a son Charles. However I consider that the Matthew and Bartelot of the preceeding record are likely sons of Robert Anderson II and nephews of this Matthew. Matthew the elder had died by 1719 and the Matthew of the above record would have to be a Matthew, Jr. Other records associate Bartelot with the sons of Robert Anderson II.

The James some list as a son of Robert is likely this mans son. There was a tendency to claim all the Andersons in the Hanover tax lists as belonging to Robert.

Notes for Cicilia Massie:

The widow Cicilia Anderson is prominent in the precessioning records of St. Paul's parish.

Cicilia Anderson, widow

N New Found River, adj. William Rice.

1724 adj. John Stanley, David Crawford

N New Found River, adj. William Rice, granted to Cecelia Anderson, widow 11/13/1721 on condition of seating

1727 adj. Charles Chiswell

Cicilia's association with the Massie family suggests that she was the Cecilai Massie of traidtion in the ANderson family. Unfortunately previous researchers have variously ccclaimed her to be a daughter of Robert, 12 and/or his wife. I have only been able to find evidence that his one Cecilai was a member of the family.

15 vi. Thomas Anderson15,16, born Aft. 1680 in New Kent County, Virginia; died October 1757 in Albemarle County, Virginia. He married (1) Agnes Gannaway Bef. 1705; born Abt. 1680; died Bef. 1750 in Albemarle County, Virginia. He married (2) Mary ? Bef. 1736.

Notes for Thomas Anderson:

Thomas' birth date had been corrected to reflect the fact that he does not appear as a land holder in the 1704 rent roll and may differ from the writings of William Pope Anderson. Anderson - Overton, A Continuation of Anderson Family Records (1936) & Early Descendants fo William Overton & Elizabeth Waters of Virginia & Allied Families, by William Pope Anderson, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1945.

In 1719 Gilbert Gibson was given a patent adjacent to Matthew and Thomas Anderson in New Kent County. Thomas' association with Robert Anderson I derives from an analysis of precessioning records in St. Paul's Parish published in the book above. Thomas was a church warden for St. Pauls Parish in the 1720's.

In 1733 Thomas was replaced as a church warden of St. Paul's parish and ordered to surrender the moneys of the parish to Thomas Merriweather. He continues as a vestryman until 1737 when he ws removed as vestryman. In 1739 he is restored as vestryman until 1754. As can be seen in the records below he was dabbling in western lands during this period and even spent some time in jail in 1738. Obviously he had been corrupted by his second wife :-) By 1739 he had apparently left his western hands in the control of his eldest sons and had returned to his lands in St. Paul's parish. Frontier life was not to his liking.

Thomas acquisition of western lands would have been in the interests of his many sons and is it unlikely that he removed into western Hanover County to the Goochland border area and into the area that became Albemarle County, Virginia until he was elderly and living with one of those sons.

I copied the following out of a will book at the Albemarle Co. Courthouse. Have no idea if it ties into my line but thought it might be helpful to people researching this family. It was difficult to read in parts but I think I got all the basics.

Hello Pat:

Pat here! Boy that could get confusing, but we won't let it. Thank you so very much for the research notes on Elizabeth, and the directions to the two web sites. Having only read the notes at this time of night (10:47 PM) it really does clarify my question regarding Reynard &

Thomas.

Besides the connection through Thomas, what caught my eye immediately, was my connection to John Gannaway & John Gannaway II or Jr. as witnesses to Thomas' 10/25/1757 will. John I is my 6th G grandfather; John II is my 5th G grandfather. We carry the Gannaway line from Jacapo di Genoa & Leonora di Medici in 1544 to my grandmother, Mary Pearl (Gannaway) Black.

t would appear that Agnus (Gannaway) Anderson could be an elder sister (by four years) of John I, the daughter of Marmaduke & Henrietta

(Campmartin) Gannaway of London.

I am looking froward to going through the web sites. Again, our best regards; we'll be in touch. Please let us know if you would like any

information on the Gannaways, Woodsons, or any other early family groups (I'm sure we'll find a few more connections).

Pat

7. William5 Anderson (Richard4, Richard3, York Watershed2, Colonial Virginia1)17 was born Abt. 1637 in York County, Virginia, and died Aft. 1676 in Gloucester County, Virginia.

Notes for William Anderson:

The Anderson families of the York River Basin have been written about by William Pope Anderson in the 1930's who was generally more careful about what he claimed than other writers. However he made no reference to this William Anderson. He lists a William ANderson in a tax roll in 1708 and comments that he sold his land to Matthew Anderson but addresses him no further.

From Virginia records and Some of W.P. Andersons notes it is obvious that there were coincident families with Robert Anderson headed by Richard and William and they all moved into the area that broke up into New Kent, King William & King & Queen Counties moving upstream from Gloucester County along the north bank of the York River.

A study of the Louisa County Land Patents indicates the presence of Anderson families that have been unassigned to date by any researcher and it is my suggestion that additional work on this line of William may connect some of them. A more thorough examination of the King William County Records is needed to determine if their were any other sons of this early WIlliam Anderson. Caroline County records of the 1700's reveal the presence of WIlliam Andersons that I suspect descned fromthis man.

The Rappahanock Road was probaly the predecessor to Virginia Route 17 and William Anderson's land fell between this road to the northern Counties and the Poroptank River which formed the border between Gloucester and King WIlliam Counties. It is likely that he owned land on both side of the rier and coutny line. Gloucester County records were lost in an 1820 fire and it is possible that additional information would be available on him from them.

This man may have had additional children that may be revealed by an examination of King William County records.

Child of William Anderson is:

8. Richard5 Anderson (Richard4, Richard3, York Watershed2, Colonial Virginia1)20 was born Abt. 1639 in York County, Virginia, and died Aft. 1704 in King and Queen County, Virginia. He married Caty ? Abt. 1680.

From Virginia records and Some of W.P. It is my speculation that this Richard was a son of Richard of the middle peninsula. William Pope Anderson inserted the family tree in his book without comment on what the association might be.
