Samuel BURCHFIELD. Born in Wales, circa 1640.  Samuel first married an Elizabeth Bitmore, according to information found on Ancestry.com, he married second to Mary Frizzel, daughter of Forker Frizzel.

Samuel Burchfield arrived in Baltimore, Maryland in 1662 from England. Francis Riggs paid for his voyage. Francis Riggs was the first Banker of Maryland. This documentation is found in the Hall of Records in Annanapolis, Maryland. Samuel was made an indentured servant for John Watkine for 5 years. He came aboard the ship Duty as an indentured servant.  He served his time and was released. After his release, he was given 50 acres in or around Baltimore, Maryland.

NOTE:  I have a booklet "One Branch of the Birchfield Family of Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee" by Larry Stallcup from which some of this information was obtained.  Contact Larry @ Stalcop@aol.com.  His information is very thorough and well documented and he is a very helpful and pleasant individual.  See notes here.

Please not that the above has NOT been proven and there is doubt to it's accuracy.  Please do not use this unproven information as fact, but perhaps a direction to perform more research.

St. George's Parish in Maryland

Map of Maryland highlighting Harford County Harford County, Maryland was first discovered in 1608 by Captain John Smith of the Virginia Colony, when he made a fairly accurate map of the upper country and its islands and shores. About 1649, Colonel Nathaniel Utie came from Virginia to explore the upper bay region and find a place to settle, and was granted an island located a few hundred yards south of Havre de Grace. He named it Spesutie, using the Latin Spes-Utie, meaning Utie's Hope. The spelling was later changed to Spesutia as it is known today. When the Church of England became the established church of the Palatinate of Maryland, the first Vestry House was erected at Spesutie Parish on the property which belonged by grant to Col. Nathaniel Utie. In 1718, Spesutie Parish was divided into St. George's and St. John's Parishes, and the Spesutia Church of St. George's Parish was erected two miles away at Perryman, where it still stands today.

Third Generation

Robert BURCHFIELD. Born on 27 Feb 1710 in Fredrick Co., Maryland. Robert died in Burke County, North Carolina in Mar 1783, he was 73.  On 4 Dec 1735 when Robert was 25, he married Ann Clark, in St. George's Parish Church, Maryland.  Robert Burchfield was the only Robert Burchfield found to be old enough to patent land in Frederick Co., Md. in 1742 and he is probably the same Robert that patented lands in 1749, 1759 and 1766.  By 1766 he was married to his second wife, Elizabeth Justice. Robert and Elizabeth sold land in 1766 and 1772. He would have been 62 years old at the later deed.

Generation One

1. Robert3 Burchfield (Thomas2, Samuel1) was born February 27, 1709/10 in Maryland, and died March 1783 in Burke County, North Carolina. He married (1) Ann Clark December 04, 1735 in St. Georges Parrish Church, Maryland. He married (2) Elizabeth Justice Aft. 1760 in Frederick County, Maryland, daughter of John Justice.

Notes for Robert Burchfield:
Killed by Indians

Robert apparently moved to Fredrick County early and became a fairly large land owner. In 1742, 50 acres was patented to him. It was called Robert's Purchase. He probably had already been living on this land. It usually took several years to get land patents settled. Seven years later another 50 acres was patented to Robert. It was called Crooked Piece. In 1759, Robert was patented more land. This time it was 190 acres named Robert's Care. The last piece of land known to belong to Robert was 51 acres named Long Meadow.

On March 3, 1769, Robert sold to Charles Wells the 51 acre parcel known as Long Meadow with the consent of his second wife.

Robert probably moved to North Carolina in the summer of 1772. On May 19, 1772, Robert sold all of their interests in land holdings in Fredrick County, Maryland to Jacob Crumbacker for 500 Pounds current money. In those days it was a considerable fortune. Robert moved his entire family into Burke County, NC where he took up quite a bit of land. The first grant, on March 17, 1778, was for 350 acres on Issac Creek of south side of Catawba River 1/2 mile from main river including improvements already there. A few months later on August 28, 1778, he obtained 290 acres joining his earlier acquired track. This second parcel extended on up Issac Creek. In the Burke County land records there is also a note on page 366 between entries #1113 and #1114 for 150 acres of land on Earnest branch. There is not date or any other information recorded about this parcel of land. One of his neighboring land owners was Joshua Sherrell. His neighbor on the opposite side of the Catawba River was John Forsith.

Revolutionary War applications for pensions of both Robert Jr. and Meshack state that their father, Robert Sr., was killed by Indians in Burke County, North Carolina, early in 1783. The next mention of Robert Sr., is when his son, Robert Jr. sells the 350 acre track to Frances Cuningham, July 12, 1784. By that time the area where the land was located had changed over from Burke County to Lincoln County. The last mention of Robert Sr. in surviving Burke County records is in the July 1802 Court Minutes of Wills, Estates and Orphans where Nicholas Trosper was appointed administrator to settle the estate of Robert and Elizabeth (both) deceased. (my note, Nicholas Trosper was married to Sally Burchfield, Robert and Elizabeth's daughter, so Nicholas was their son-in-law, and this is my line.)  See the Trosper line here.

Notes for Elizabeth Justice:

Burke County land records entry #1850, page 615 -- Jesse Burgan, 200 acres on Cain Creek that empties into the north side of Catawba River below Ephram Mc Leans entry. Entered June 18, 1779. Transferred to Elizabeth Burchfield. The word transferred means Elizabeth bought the land from Jesse Burgan before the land grant was finalized. She would also have paid for it with her own money. Normally in this period women did not have land entered into their own name.

Elizabeth Burchfield appears on the 1796 and 1797 Entry Takers (tax) Returns for Burke County. On September 25, 1798, Elizabeth Burchfield filed a bill of sale for a horse she sold to William England. Robert Carithers and Reuben Dement were witnesses to the sale.

Elizabeth's estate is first mentioned in October 1801 and her estate sale is mentioned in April 1802. It was not unusual for an estate settlement to be delayed until after the death of the widow especially if there was no will and she did not re-marry. Robert Sr. did not have time to make his will before his death.

Children of Robert Burchfield and Ann Clark are:

i

Nathan Burchfield, born in Frederick County, Virginia; died March 1783 in Burke County, North Carolina.

Notes for Nathan Burchfield:

Like his father, Nathan became a large land owner in Burke County, North Carolina. On February 5, 1778, he was granted 200 acres on main Catawba River, both sides. On May 28, 1778, he was granted 300 acres on 'Linvills' River with improvements. Nathan was noted as already being in possession of this land so it is reasonable to assume he made his home on this parcel of land. Nathan is mentioned as being a neighbor of Danial Russell on Catawba River on November 28, 1778. On December 28, 1778, Nathan acquired an additional 150 acres on Linvills River next to the land he already owned.

Nathan's name appears as an accused Tory on the Subpoena Docket for Tories, November 18, 1782. This does not mean that Nathan was a Tory but only that someone had accused him of being a Tory. No proof was required for this accusation to be made. This was before the U.S. Constitution was written so it was a case of assumed quilt until you could prove yourself innocent. Nathan apparently never had a chance to prove himself innocent. He died just a few months later.

Since Nathan died at almost the same time as his father it is quite possible that he died of wounds he received in the same Indian attack that killed his father. An administrators bond was granted to Avarilla Burchfield, April 23, 1783 for the estate of Nathan Burchfield. at the sale of his estate, Avarilla Burchfield was one of the buyers.

Notes for Aberilla Wilson:  -Avarilla's name first appears on the 1779 land grant index for Burke County, North Carolina. In the 1783 Court records there is record of a subpoena issued to Greenberry Wilson, Avarilla Burchfield, John Baker, Jane Gowin, Thos. White Sr., on behalf of Danial Gowin vs. James Murphy, for the April term. Subpoenas were issued in 1788 for Christian Isom, Greenberry Wilson in the case of State and Avarilla Burchfield vs. Catherine smith, wife of John Smith. John Wood, Atty. John Davidson, foreman (4 papers). This case must have been interesting. Later there were two attachments issued by the court; Christian Isom in case of John Smith vs. Avarilla Burchfield, October 23. Also, Greenberry Wilson, Christian Isom, in case of Avarilla Burchfield vs. John Smith, January, October 23, 24. Attendance ticket of Isom. It is hard to tell who was suing who.

Child of Nathan Burchfield and Aberilla Wilson is:

8 i. Nathan5 Burchfield, Jr., born 1780 in North Carolina; died 1863. He married Anne McKinney; born 1785.

ii

Thomas Burchfield, b. 1737.  He married Sarah LEATHERWOOD. Child of Thomas Burchfield and Sarah Leginwood is:  Lydia Burchfield

Robert's son, Thomas was born in 1737-two years AFTER he married ANN CLARK, and many years before he married Elizabeth Justice  My late mother, Julia HUNTER Williams's records indicate that ANN CLARK was Lydia's grandmother-NOT Elizabeth Justice.  From my cousin Nina:  This couple's daughter, Lydia Burchfield Hunter is one of my 4th great-grandmothers. She is the one who was scalped as a toddler, lived to marry Andrew Hunter and became an ancestress of my late mother, Julia HUNTER Williams. Her sister, Mary Burchfield, age 5, was kidnapped by the Cherokee and legend has it that she married an Indian chieftain.

Children of Robert Burchfield and Elizabeth Justice are:

John Burchfield, died December 28, 1849 in Ripley County, Indiana. He married (1) Elizabeth Hendrick May 08, 1782 in Halifax, Virginia. He married (2) Polly Patterson 1815.  Notes for John Burchfield:

John appears on the 1793 Entry Takers Returns. He is listed without land but owning one stud (horse). John also appears on the 1799 Entry Takers Return. He does not appear on the 1800 census indicating he had moved out of Burke County.  John apparently married after he left North Carolina.  John applied for a Revolutionary War pension #W-8175.  May have lived in Warren Co., KY

ii

Sally Burchfield, born ? died Bet. 1817 - 1822. She married Nicholas Trosper Bef. 1789.  OUR LINE.
