Duke Line - English

From Boddie:  Duke - The Duke family is of Norman origin, the name deriving from ______ designation.  As a surname it is among the most ancient of those borne by English families.  It appears in the Domesday Book and is continually chronicled during the reigns of the Norman Kings following the making of the great document which means so much to historians and genealogists.

The Family of Duke acquired many estates in England and held positions of importance.  Descendants of the Dukes who distinguished themselves under the Royal banner in the civil conflicts became allied by marriage with the Royal house.  Edward Duke of that period was rewarded by Charles II with Knighthood and a Baronetage for his allegiance.

As early however as King Richard I the Dukes were occupying positions of trust.  In the fourth and firth years of Richard I, Peter Duke was Sheriff of London, serving in the time of King John.

Peter's son was Roger Duke and strange to say he also became Sheriff of London, which they must have thought by that time was the family office.  Roger was Sheriff in the time of Henry III, and after he had served one year as sheriff he was made Mayor of London London was even then a very great city.  Roger served as its Mayor for four years, the twelfth, thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth years of the reign of Henry III.

Roger Duke's son Walter duke established himself in Brampton in the time of Edward III.  He was from this period known as Walter Duke of Brampton and did homage for his land in Shadingfield.  His son, named for his father, Roger Duke, continued to reside on the family estate.  For many generations thereafter the family is associated with Brampton and Shadingfield, though they continue to increase their property.

Roger Duke's eldest son and heir was Robert, who held the land in the time of Henry VI.  Robert's elsest son and heir was John Duke.  He married Joan, daughter and heiress of Spark of Astacton, County Suffolk.  They had a son, Thomas Duke, Esquire, of Brampton.  He married twice, first an heiress of house of Woodwell.  His second wife was Margaret daughter and heiress of Henry Baynard, Eqquire, of Speckshall, County of Suffolk.  Thomas Duke's son and heir was William Duke, who married Thomasine, daughter of Sir Edmund Jenny of Knottishhall, Suffolk,  They has a son, George Duke.

Generation One

Thomas Duke,
was probably born in County Kent, England. No one knows the exact date of his birth. From land records, we know that he was in James City County, Virginia before 1651. Thomas Duke married Mary Barham, of County Kent, England. He died before 1671 in James City County, Virginia.

  • June 6, 1651 - Thomas Duke along with Thomas Hampton, took out a patent for 430 acres: two necks of land lying on Warreny Creek in James City County, Virginia.

  • On January 21, 1671, Thomas Hampton, sold the above 420 acres for 28 pounds. From this sale, we know that Thomas Duke died before 1671.

Mary Barham Duke wife of Thomas Duke, was born in County Kent, England.

  • We know that Mary's brother was Anthony Barham, Gent. of Mulberry Island, VA, because he mentioned his sister "Mary Duke" in his will dated September 6, 1641.

  • We also know that Mary's mother was Ann Barham of Canterbury - County Kent, England. In Ann Barham's will, dated June 21, 1640, she bequeathed some money to her son Anthony Barham, who was living in Virginia.

  • After the death of Thomas Duke, Mary Barham Duke married a Mr. Wade. On April 20, 1682, a land patent was issued to Mrs. Mary Wade for 463 acres - on a branch of Tiaskun Swamp in James City County, VA. This land bounded land owned by Mary's son, Capt. Henry Duke.

Children of Thomas & Mary Barham Duke are:

i Col. Henry Duke, Esq., Councilor of Virginia, was probably born in James City County, Virginia. He married Elizabeth (last name is unknown).

From Boddie on Col Henry Duke:  Colonel Henry Duke founder of the Duke family in America was a native of County Suffolk, England, and was born about the middle of the seventeenth century.  He was the son of Sir Edward Duke and Ellen Panton Duke.  At the time Henry Duke reached his majority Virginia was attracting the younger sons of scores of English families and he evidently followed the popular tide of emigration.  He seems to have arrived possessed of some means since he almost immediately began to acquire extensive estates.  He was affiliated with the military forces and held the rank of Captain and later Colonel.  He was a member of the Governor's Royal Council.  He was a member of the house of Burgesses and he was Sheriff at Jamestown and Justice.  He left many thousands of acres in his estate at his death in 1714.  He married Lydia Hansford, daughter of Charles Hansdford.   He named his son and heir, Henry Duke and he was too a member of the House of Burgesses.  He did not long survive his father as his death took place less than four years later.

ii John Duke, married Jane Searsbrooke
iii Thomas Duke, born 1671, died 1727 (This link is not proven yet)
