Event

Mar.  1775

Richard Henderson and eight others, organized as the Transylvania Company, purchased 20-million acres of what is now the Commonwealth of Kentucky from the Cherokee Nation. Immediately, Daniel Boone was sent forth by the Company to carve out a path to the purchased lands. Boone, with 30 road cutters, spent two months cutting through the Gap and into “Kanta-Ke”. By April, they arrived at the Kentucky River and began labor on the capital of the new Transylvania Colony, called Boonesboro. Both Virginia and North Carolina declared the purchase null and void, but later granted lands to Henderson.

1775- 1810

App. 2-300,000 hopeful settlers used the Wilderness Road. (¾ of the Kentucky immigrants came by land, while ¼ came by boat on the Ohio River).

1775- 1777

Boonesboro was the primary target of Indian hostilities in Kentucky. The fort was attacked in December 1775 and in April and July 1777 by large war parties. The Calloway girls and Boones' daughter were captured in July 1776.

1776

Transylvania becomes Kentucky County, Virginia.

May 1778

George Rogers Clark along with about 150 militia and 20 families, rafted down the Ohio River and landed near the Falls on Corn Island. Clark and his men soon left on their quest to conquer the Northwest Territory. The settlers who remained behind moved to the southern shore of the Ohio and established Louisville. The Road was then pushed out from Harrodsburg to meet them.

Sept. 1778

The "Great Siege of Boonesboro" began as 400 Indians and 12 French companions appeared at the fort. The French and Indians attempted to set fire to the fort by shooting fireballs onto the roofs of the cabins. The plan failed because the women and children of the fort put out the fires and were aided by heavy rainfall. Next the attackers tried to burrow under the foundation of the stockade. The pioneers thwarted this scheme and the French and Indians retreated after a 13-day siege.

Spring 1779

Brashear's Station was the first settlement established on the Wilderness Road between Harrodsburg and the Falls of the Ohio. Brashear's Station was a haven for pioneer hunters and travelers. It was built at the mouth of Floyd's Fork near the bank of the Salt River. Founded by William Brashear, a famed woodsman from Maryland, who was killed by Indians, 1781.

1779

Bullitt's Lick established as the site of the first commercial saltworks west of the Alleghenies, with the encouragement of Clark, who needed salt for his campaigns. Salt was critical as it was the only preservative available to use on beef and wild meat. Without salt, an army cannot travel and settlers face starvation when game is scarce. Bullitt's Lick supplied salt for all of Kentucky during this period. The Wilderness Road was deflected miles out of its way in order to reach Bullitt's Lick.

1780

Dowdall's Station on the Salt River, founded by John and James Dowdall and others, as the first ferry across the river.

Aug.

1784

Walker Daniel, first attorney general of Kentucky, and others left Sullivan's Old Station for the Saltworks at Bullitt's Lick, when they were attacked and killed by Indians. Nearby settlers recovered the bodies which were taken to the Saltworks and buried the following day.

1790

Kentucky’s population rises over 73,000.

June 1792

Kentucky, never a territory, becomes the 15th state.

1794-1795

Wayne's victory at the Battle of the Fallen Timber in 1794 and the signing of the Treaty of Greenville in 1795 ended the earlier Indian wars of the Old Northwest and opened for settlement the country beyond the Ohio River, resulting in a great migration into Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky.

1797

Bullitt County, KY formed from Jefferson and Nelson Counties. The county seat, Shepherdsville, was founded by Adam Shepherd on the Salt River. It was chartered in 1793.

1800

Kentucky’s population reaches 220,000, being then nearly as great as that of Connecticut; only one third less than that of Maryland; more than half that of Massachusetts; more than one third that of Pennsylvania; one fourth that of Virginia, and nearly one-fourth that of the two Carolinas.

Aug. 1811

The Wilderness Trail had fallen into disuse. Title to thousands of acres of disputed land depended on rediscovering its location. Summons from the Bullitt Circuit Court were issued for the few remaining settlers who had been familiar with the trace in the early days, including Squire Boone and to Jacob Vanmeter and John Tuel and James Patton, who had come to Corn Island with Clark in 1778.  Altogether, more than 20 of these veteran pioneers responded. They walked the old road from the Blue Lick Gap in Bullitt County to the Fern Creek Crossing in Jefferson, pointed out its route to the County surveyor, and related the incidents that had occurred along it. Their depositions were taken by the justices of the peace.

Generation Two

David Hall, next in our line, born 1760 and died 1814 @ 54 yrs.  He died in Bullitt County, Kentucky, he married Rachel Underwood in Bullitt Country, KY.

"The Hall family history is intertwined with the history of Bullitt County, Kentucky.  Records indicate that David Hall purchased 1400 acres of land from the Johnson family in 1788.  This land was located on the waters of Salt River in Bullitt County, then Nelson County.  This land was to be divided between David Hall and his two brothers, William and Clifton (note name), and three other relatives, David, Paris, Edmund Stringer and Thomas Harris.

The Hall brothers are thought to have come from Virginia to Lexington, KY, then Nelson County, before settling in Bullitt County.  The original acreage covered most of the land from Lloyd's Fork to what is now Mt. Washington.  While most all the land has been sold and divided among descendants, about 150 acres of the original property is still in the Hall family today.  This property is located on Hall's Lane on the banks of Floyd's Fork just before the bridge to Shepherdsville. Still living on the Hall land is Glendon, Shirley and Emery Hall."  From:  History of Families of Bullitt Co., KY, (Turner Publishing Co., Paducah, KY (date unknown) p. 86)

Note:  The picture of David Hall's cabin, below; was generously donated from a descendant who still lives on the property.

Bullitt Co. Deed Book B p. 14 shows the start of a series of deeds that David HALL is doling out to various people.. pieces of a large survey of land - he dispenses of some of it here and I believe that the land mentioned in his will that he asks his executors to divide with what looks to be his brothers
etc. is also part of this survey. A description of what he is doing is included in the deed:

9 Sep 1805 David HALL and Rachel his wife of Bullitt Co., Commonwealth of KY to Richard STRINGER of same... Whereas Richard JOHNSON of the County of Louisa, and Commonwealth of Virginia did on 17 Nov 1788 Convey to the above David HALL a certain tract of land in Bullitt Co. situate on the waters of Salt River called McCULLOCK's preemption of 1400 acres which had been previously purchased jointly by David HALL, Clifton HALL, William HALL, David PARIS, Edmond STRINGER and Thomas HARRIS and for the convenience of those concerned the land JOHNSON conveyed was purchased by David HALL by deed of Warantee now the said David HALL wishing to convey to STRINGER his moiety of said land agreeable to their stipulations.. conveys a tract bounded by the lines of David HALL, Clifton HALL and Asa HALL - containing one hundred and two acres more or less.

Rachel(X) HALL
Recorded 9 Sep 1805 Bullitt Co.

following this deed David and Rachel convey 50 acres to John PARIS with the same explanation "bordering lands of Blaxton GENTRY, Thomas STRINGER and Edmond STRINGER" Recorded same day next to Thomas STRINGER - same explanation - 95 acres bordering Reuben STRINGER, Blaxton GENTRY and "PARIS".

next to John STRINGER - same explanation - 55 acre more or less bounded by Reuben, Edmon and Thomas STRINGER next to Blaxton GENTRY - same explanation - 99 acres more or less didn't mention who it was bounded by. All recorded 9 Sep 1805 then on 9 Dec 1805 one with the same explanation to William HALL containing 304 acres - interesting to note though that Rachel does not appear in the signature nor does she release her dower right. Now I knew some of the connections in Bullitt Co. with these families but this appeared to me like a clustering of families from pre-Kentucky who bought this land together and settled here? I watched for other deeds very
close to this one and added one more to the pot even though it did not include the HALLS - it showed the PARIS men with some connections:

9 May 1805 Bullitt Co. Deed Book B p. 61 George BISHOP of Jefferson Co. to Bartlett FOSTER of Bullitt Co. both of the State of Kentucky... bargained & sold a certain tract of land lying in Bullitt Co. on Salt River - no further description except boundaries like dogwood and black oaks - 50 acres for fifty five pounds.

Witnessed by David PARIS, Pleasant PARIS and David PARIS since the original warrant was Richard JOHNSON I thought him a primary suspect as kinfolk but ugh.. .Richard JOHNSON? Since he so kindly noted his point of origin before he came to Jefferson/Bullitt Co. as Louisa Co. VA I decided to look there - I have access to Louisa Co. marriages - I didn't have time to look at as much as I would have liked but did find the following that does seem to me to point to a long time clustering of families? HARRIS of course is common - but still seen with the context below it looks awfully suspicious?

Louisa Co. VA:

Robert GENTRY to Jane HALL 12 Aug 1739
Sarah STRINGER to Francis FIDLER 23 Nov 1779
James FOSTER to Mollie HARRIS 15 Dec 1788
Nancy GENTRY to Thomas BAILEY 6 May 1780
William PORTER to Sarah JOHNSON 19 Jun 1782
Peggy STRINGER to William MARSHALL 15 Jun 1784
Nathan HALL to Mary WOOD 11 Oct 1784
Sarah HALL to William WOOD 11 Oct 1784
Henrietta FOSTER to John STRINGER 15 Feb 1785
Bartlett FOSTER to Elizabeth HARRIS 19 Dec 1787
Margery BUNCH to James HARRIS 2 Jan 1788
Sarah HARRIS to William SPICER 11 Apr 1789
Blaxton GENTRY to Mary BUNCH 10 Feb 1790
Simion HALL to Nancy PORTER 5 Oct 1791
Zedekiah HALL to Sarah DAVIS 3 Mar 1794
Zephaniah HALL to Catherine ARMSTRONG 15 Mar 1793
Nelson FOSTER to Nancy HARRIS 12 Nov 1795

also a Richard JOHNSON to Susanna GARRETT 21 Mar 1770 who might be the grantor to David HALL - or Richard JOHNSON m. Anne SMITH 30 Sep 1772

According to a group sheet I found on GENDEX the Nancy GENTRY who marries Thomas BAILEY above was b. 1762 in Louisa Co. and died after 1848 in Hardin Co. KY and was the sister of Blackston GENTRY. Their mother was Elizabeth STRINGER b. 1730 in Louisa Co. There was also indications in that information that some of these people had some Bedford Co. VA connections?  GENTRY researchers may know more about that?  moved to KY with his brothers and Edmond Stringer, David Paris and Thomas Harris

Generation Three

William Hall was born about 1785 (according to his tombstone below) in Virginia, probably in Louisa County?  In a biography on the family that I found in Indiana in a Washington County history book it was stated "The Halls were natives of Virginia, from which State they moved to Kentucky in a very early day, and from thence to Indiana in 1818, settling in Washington County."  Here they became prominently connected with the settlement of the county, and worthy and honored citizens.”

William is buried in the Hall Cemetery, Howard Township, Washington County, Indiana.  This author has been to this cemetery, and the photos on this page are of my visit.  William Hall married Mary "Polly" Thixton, daughter of

"My husband's Thixton ancestor is Mary "Polly" Thixton born about 1784 in Virginia and died 1847 in Washington County, Indiana. She married William Hall February 23, 1805 in Bullitt County, Kentucky.  Mary's father was John Thixton born 1740 in Virginia and died April 1807 in Bullitt County, Kentucky. John was married to a woman named Mary (surname unknown to me) and they had the following children: Mary, Elizabeth Sarah, Rebecca, Joseph, Abraham, William (named after John's brother who came to Kentucky with him) and John, III. I believe John, II's parent's were John Thickstun of New Jersey and Mary Martin.  wicwind@adelphia.net  Irene Windell.

I recently went to Indiana (May 2003) and visited the Hall Cemetery, Howard Township, Washington County, Indiana (a very large page with lots of photos, be patient if working with a "slower" connection).  I took pictures of almost all of the stones in the cemetery, not just the Hall ones.  The cemetery is well kept and there have been a recent burials.  The Gilstrap's intermarried with the Halls and they lived about a mile up the road.  I stopped and photographed the Gilstrap Cemetery too.  There are several Gilstrap children in the Hall Cemetery as well.

William Hall married Mary “Polly” Thixton in 2/23/1805 Bullitt County, KY - they had eight children:

i.

Rebecca Hall

ii.

John W. Hall

iii

William Hall - from a cousin who descends from a William Hall, b. 1818, and suspects William Hall and Mary Thixton Hall are his parents, I do too.  Pictures of his tombstone and his wife's are on the Hall Cemetery page.  This William is buried very near William Hall, b. 1785.

William, b. 1818, shows up in the 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 Howard Township, Washington County, IN censuses. The 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses show his wife to be Phebe or Pheba. She is not shown in the 1880 census. Some information I have shows her to be a Durnil or Dunrell. They were married on 28 Sep 1837, Washington County, Indiana. In fact, you have a shot of her tombstone in your 18th row, the first column.

Some sources show William, b. 1818, to have had a second wife, Lucy C. MCKINNEY, b. ABT 1856, Kentucky, m. 4 Mar 1887, Washington County, Indiana, d. unknown.

William, b. 1818, and Phebe had 10 children. One of these, William A., b. 1849, is in my direct line. He shows up in the 1880 Howard Township and the 1900 Madison Township censuses. He and his wife, Laura E. Mitchell, are buried in Crown Hill Cemetery, Salem, Washington County, Indiana. William A. and Laura had 7 children, one of which was John W. Hall, in my direct line. John W. and his wife, Cora Standish, had 2 children, including my grandfather, Miles A. Hall, Sr.

There may be more information that I have, but I can't put my finger on it right now. Look forward to sharing information with you in the future.

Terry Hall

iii.

Bluford Hall, Born 1811 - married Rachel Gilstrap.  BLUFORD HALL A citizen of Howard Township, was born in Kentucky on the 22day of April, 1811, being the third of a family of eight children born to William and Polly (Thixton) Hall. His parents were natives of Virginia, from which State they moved to Kentucky in a very early day, and from thence to Indiana in about 1818, settling in Washington County. Here they became prominently connected with the settlement of the county, and worthy and honored citizens. The subject of this sketch had very limited means of securing an education, but by his energy succeeded in obtaining enough for the business of life. He remained with his parents until he attained his twenty-second year, and November 28, 1833, his marriage with Rachel Gilstrap was celebrated, and to this union were born nine children, four of whom are now living: Maria (deceased), Sarah J., John W., David J., Lewis L. (who died in Andersonville Prison), Samantha E. (deceased), Nelson F. (deceased) and Mary E. He is a member of the Christian Church, and in politics is a Republican, but is not radical in his views. He is one of the successful farmers of the county, an upright citizen, and his people are among the best in the county.  Bluford and Rachel's tombstones are in the Hall Cemetery in Howard Township, Washington County, Indiana.

iv.

Jackson Hall, born 1800 ? there is a Jackson Hall buried in the Hall cemetery.  Jackson could have possibly married Sarah Kester and had at least one son named John Hall who served in the Civil War as noted below.

v.

Nancy Hall (our line), born circa 1805, died around 1848.

In the 1840 Census for Washington County, IN, Posey Township, the following are listed as residents, the last four living next to each other, Peter is separate.

Generation Four

Nancy Hall was born circa 1805 in Washington County, Indiana and married Elisha Wood on November 11, 1824 in Washington County, Indiana.  Elisha was the son of Abraham Wood and his first wife, ______ Wood (possible first cousin), both of which were originally from Pennsylvania.  Nancy Hall and Elisha Wood had the following children: (birth dates are from the 1850 Washington County, Jackson Township Census).  Nancy died between the 1840-1850 Census, and I have a feeling it could have been related to the birth of her last child, Elizabeth, but I am not certain about this.  Nancy Hall and Elisha Wood are more than likely buried at the Mill Creek Cemetery in Washington County, Indiana, picture on left.

Nancy E. Wood (our line), 1824

ii

iii

Cynthia Wood, born 1832

iv

Generation Five

Nancy Wood was born June 1, 1824 and died on 3 March 1905 when she was 81 yrs old.  In the 1880 Sullivan County, Indiana census, Nancy put down that her mother (Mary "Polly" Thixton) was born in Kentucky.  Nancy Wood married Elias Bell in Washington Country, Indiana.  On the 1880 Sullivan county census, Nancy put down that her father, Abraham Wood, was born in Pennsylvania.

Myself in 2002 next to Elias Bell and Nancy Wood's tombstone in Little Flock Cemetery in Sullivan County, IN.
