Erwin Line - See some background on the name here.

First Generation

John ERWIN, SR., listed in the Clark County, Indiana census with the following children.  Wife either not alive at the time or she is not named.  John was born (probably) in Burke County, North Carolina.  His birth date is guessed to be circa 1780 or shortly before.  There is a John Erwin in the 1812 Indiana Census, in the militia.  Source:  Ancestry.com.  In the 1820 Indiana State Wide Census, the following family is listed and is our "John" with his sons:

ERWIN SR was born Abt. 1774.

Pam Mauer's notes:

1. John Erwin on 1812 militia list for Clark co., Indiana.

2. It appears that John Erwin patented several tracts of land in Indiana, one of which was 9/9/1835 for acreage in Lawrence co., Indiana. In 1830 Lawrence co IN other Erwin mentions are: William, Joseph, James, Robert.

I think that the family consists of John Sr., and the rest are his sons, including the William listed in Clark county.  Simon Erwin is our line.

I have constructed the children of John Erwin, Sr. and unknown, prob died in NC as follows:

i.

John Erwin, Jr.

ii.

Joseph Erwin, a Joseph Erwin married Margaret Penny in August of 1817; three years before Simon married, this was in Clark County, found on Ancestry.com

iii.

Simon Erwin, born circa 1795 in Burke County, North Carolina, married Arbuthnot Trosper in 1820 in Clark county, Indiana.  Our line.

iv

David Erwin (pretty sure he is a son)

v

William Erwin ? possible son or brother to John Sr.

vi.

Robert Erwin ? possible son of John Sr. -From Donald Cree, 2004:

Late last year when going through Lorraine's photos, I found one that listed on the back- "Levi, Malinda, and Albert Irvin- grandma's cousins".   The only Irvin either of us had in our files was our gt.gt.gt. grandmother Jane Irvin who married Arnett Shields. Neither of us had ever heard of these three Irvin's, but the only Irvin line would come through Adelia Ann Shields our gt. grandmother, and Edith's grandmother.   I jotted down notes for that the picture was taken I believe in 1917, and guessed their ages at between 50 to 60 years old, and being born about 1860-1870.

Later on I started to look around the 1880 Indiana census records to see if I could find any Irvin family who had children named Levi, Malinda, and Albert- and found only one match- Erastus Irvin of 1880 Marshall County, Indiana (This was very interesting because my gt. grandmother Adelia Shields was born in Marshall County, but none of us could ever figure out why.  The Shields had lived in Cass County both before and after the birth of Adelia in 1860, but now this made a connection to Marshall County).  Marshall County, is about 50 miles north of Cass County.

Now that I had Erastus, I figured he would be easy to find on an 1850 census!  The only Erastus Irvin in Indiana in 1850, was the son of Robert and Isabella Ervin of Howard County, Indiana (the names of their children- particularly Robert, Isabella, and Edwin were of unique interest, since those names appear among the children of Arnett Shields and Jane Irvin- but were not found among other Shields line.  Another question answered!).  Howard County, Indiana was originally formed as Richardville County (after the Miami Indian Chief Richardville) in 1844, with the name being later changed to Howard (after a local pioneer and Indian trader- David Howard) in 1846.

An early historical document (History of Ervin Township, Howard County, Indiana- by D. W. Tucker indicates that Robert Ervin was elected as an Associate Justice for, first Richardville, and later Howard County from the years 1844 to 1851.  Ervin Township of the same County was named in his honor.   That portion of Howard County, was once a part of neighboring Carroll County- where I found Robert Irwin listed in the 1840 census (This attached nicely because Jane Irvin and Arnett Shields were married in Carroll County, in 1838!).

The 1877 Kingman Brothers Historical Atlas of Howard County, Indiana under Ervin Township (by C. H. Holmes) states that "This township was named in honor of Robert Ervin, who was a native of Kentucky, and one of the Associate Judges of Howard County from 1844 to 1851.  He emigrated to Indiana, and in 1840 or 1842 erected a log cabin near the forks of Pete's Run, on Section 29, where he resided until his death."   This too fits nicely in that Levi Beckner, Robert Ervin's son-in-law, lived just north and adjacent to Section 29- at the south end of Section 20.

Having established Robert in Carroll County in 1840, and having the names of his children- I traced him to Morgan County, Indiana where his daughter Pelena Ervin was born in 1829.   I believe he is the same Robert Ervin listed in the 1830 Morgan County census.   There is a John Ervin living in Morgan in 1830, which I think may be his brother (There was also a John Irvine living in Carroll County in 1840 which I thought to be the same man, but when I compared the two- their children did not match at all.   The 1830 John Ervin of Morgan has lots of girls and 1 boy, while the 1840 Carroll County John Irvine has lots of boys and only 2 girls!).

I found some further confirmation among the Marshall County records with a copy of a marriage record for Erastus Irvin- that listed his father as Robert Irvin and his mother as Isabella McNott!   Then, I also found McNaught's living in Morgan County too!  Finally I did a search of early Indiana marriage records, and found the marriage of Isabella McNaught and Robert Ervin among Clark County, Indiana records.   This is what led me to your web page listing.  And based on the marriage of Robert & Isabella Ervin/Erwin/Irvin/Irwin in nearby Clark County, and the ages of their children from later census records- I believe them to be living in Washington County, Indiana in 1820.   This is the story of my side of the family as I know it.  I look forward to hearing how your connection goes.   Hopefully I can get copies of Lorraine's pictures to share with you, and will try to send more what I have to you later (which isn't much).    I have a print of Arnett Shields and Jane Irvin from the Cass County Historical Atlas, and pictures of later generations- but that's about it.  Sincerely, Don Cree

"According to Lawrence County History: "In the Spring of 1816, new parties from North Carolina and South Carolina were:  George Sheeks, William Erwin, John Finger, Joseph Please, Elijah Murray, Thomas Rowark, John Sutton and James and Joseph Boswell.  Thomas Rowark was a blacksmith, the rest were farmers.

In 1817 families came into the township from the south and built, as did Squire Hoskins.  Here the first election was held the first Monday of August.  There were 13 voters, ten Federalists who were:  James Boswell, Joseph Boswell, Arthur Dycus, Robert Erwin, William Erwin, Samuel G. Hoskins, James Mathis, Elijah Murray, Joseph Pless and Thomas Rowark; and three Republicans were were:  Joseph Culbertson, John Finger and George Sheeks."

I ran copies of the census records on ancestry.com for 1820 Floyd co., Ind. Greenville tp.

What is also interesting is another mention in the same county of a David Erwin and My Peter Quackenbush-father to Henry Quackenbush who married Nancy Erwin. He and John Sr Erwin it appears are both on the 1812 militia mentioned in 1812 Clark co Ind.  In 1810 My Peter was in NY. I believe John Sr Erwin was recently out of Tennessee or KY but am investigating more.

Simon Erwin is listed as born 1794-1804 with 1 female born 1794-1804 and one female born 1810-1820.  This then appears to lend credence to the first marriage to the mentioned Mary Hagerman with one daughter.

I noted in the Ancestry.com indexes also in an 1820 soundex search on Trosper -
A Henry Traughbaugh Harrison Co Ind. N Div p 59 Ind. Have you seen or heard of this one?

In 1810 it appears that John Sr Erwin and William Erwin are both in 1810 Harrison co., Ind.

I believe you mentioned finding Nicholas Trosper in 1820 Lawrence co IN

*James & Peter Trosper appear to have been in Gibson co., TN

1820 Indiana Census

Nicholas Trosper; one male 10-16, one male 45 and up. One foreigner not naturalized; and 2 persons engaged in agriculture.

I went back and did a search of the county of Clark to find the John and Nicholas mentioned which was misspelled in the index on Ancestry.com. Both are there. pg 4 and 17

I have again been looking too at the Col Charles McDowell group that Nicholas Trosper is supposed to be a Captain of. I have yet to find the reference but it does appear McDowell and his group fought the Tories, were at Kings Mt, etc. Why would a man go to Indiana, as a said Captain on the American side and be claimed an un-naturalized foreigner in 1820 if he came in 1736 fought and so forth? And yes, it would mean he was not a US citizen immigrating some time from the time he was born to then. I will have to find the information for early naturalization. It would seem some law prevailed then for citizenship.

Second Generation

Simon ERWIN.
Born circa 1795 in Burke Co., North Carolina. Simon died in Clark/Floyd Co., Indiana.  Simon first married Mary HAGERMAN, in Lawrence Co., IN.  On 8 Jan 1820 when Simon was about 25, he second married Arbuthnot (Milly) TROSPER, daughter of James TROSPER and Elizabeth unknown in Clark County, Indiana. Born in Burke Co., North Carolina. Arbuthnot ("Milley") died in ?  (Arbuthnot "Milley" Trosper, pictured left).

Milley's husband Simon died sometime between 1833 when their last daughter was born and 1840 when  Milley is found living alone with her girls in the 1840 Lawrence County, IN Census.  In 1842 Milley would have been 42-48 yrs old.   Sarah Jane was one the youngest born in 1833 so Simon had to die between 1833 and 1840.

Elizabeth Havel was a descendant of the Lloyds, (who our Trosper line married into), and she and my mother wrote back and forth in the 1980's.  From one of her letters I quote:

"Since Mildred (Arbuthnot Trosper) married Simon Erwin in Clark County, Indiana on January 8, 1820, I think she (Arbuthnot) came into the county with her father (grandfather?) and brother around 1818/19 and met Simon Erwin there.  Simon Erwin came into the county around 1802 with his father John and a number of brothers."  In the Indiana 1820 State Census the following Trosper's are listed:

TROSPER, John

4

Clark

TROSPER, Nicholas

17

Clark

Previous to our making a connection from our Arbuthnot to James Trosper as her father, we had thought that Nicholas was her father , but the dates really didn't "jibe" for this to be true.  More than likely Arbuthnot was the daughter of James Trosper and an unknown first wife, but we haven't been able to prove it.

1840 Lawrence County Census:
"Melly" Erwin, head of household
One Female - 5/10 - 1830-1835 (Sarah Jane)
Two Females - 10/15 - 1825-1830 (Matilda? Henrietta?)
Three Females - 15/20 - 1820-1825 (Louisa, Nancy, One Female - 50 - 1790-1800 (Milley)

See Research performed on the Erwin Girls here.

Simon Erwin and Milley (Arbuthnot Trosper) had the following children:

i

Louisa Erwin (1821-1888), our line

ii Nancy Erwin. Born circa 1822, Indiana.  Nancy married Henry QUACKENBUSH on October 5, 1851 in Lawrence County, Indiana.  According to information on ancestry; they had the following children:  Alonzo, Mary, Saray, Minerva, Matthew, Albert and Susan.

In the 1850 Lawrence County, Shawswick Township, there is a John Erwin family living next door to Peter Quackenbush, Peter is the father of Henry who married Nancy.  John Erwin, (35) born 1815.  Possibly brother to Simon Erwin?  This one says he was born in Indiana.

iii

Lucinda Erwin. Born 1824
indicated by the 1870 census on left. Lucinda married Richard SUTTON  (my note: I found several Hagerman families in Greene county and wonder if they are connected to Simon's first wife, Mary Hagerman?)  In the 1870 Greene Co., Cass Twp. I find Richard and Lucinda living with a George Irwin.  George is 21, making him born 1851.  Richard is 57 and Lucinda is 46.  I can't find them in any 1860 census yet.  I found Richard Sutton living in Greene Co., Cass Twp. in the 1880 census.  He is 65 yrs old and listed as a farm laborer and widower.  George Irwin was born in 185

iv

Matilda A. Erwin
- born circa 1829 in Indiana.  Matilda married James F. NUGENT on August 14, 1854 in Lawrence County, Indiana.  Someone on ancestry has Matilda and James having a son named David R. Nugent, born abt 1857, IN.  This person has Matilda's middle initial of "A".

1860 Census, Washington Twp., Greene County, P.O. Newberry
James F., 40
Matilda N. 31
David R. Nugent, 3
Appeon Roberts 23

In the 1870 Martin County, IN

I believe Matilda has remarried, apparently her husband James had died.  She is married to a Snyder:

Snyder, Norman B., 47
Snyder, Matilda, 42, b. 1828
Nugent, David R., 13, b. 1857

In the 1880 Greene County, IN Census:
Snyder, Norman B., 57
Snyder, Matilda, 57
Snyder, Mary A., 27 (says daughter, could be step daugher too)

I can't find them after 1880, or any death records.

Sister Nancy Quackenbush is on the same page and is living with her son Matthu Quackenbush.

v

Sarah Jane Erwin, April 23, 1832, died January 30, 1902

Sarah married Thomas C. Kennedy, Kanaday, etc.  They married on 28 Jan 1849 in Lawrence Co. Indiana.  They are found in the following census:

1850

1860 Green Co., IN

1870  Greene Co., IN

1880 They are in Sullivan County, Indiana

1900

Third Generation

Louisa ERWIN. Born on 11 Jan 1821 in Floyd Co., Indiana. Louisa died in Sullivan Co., Indiana on 18 Feb 1888, she was 67.  On 27 Dec 1840 when Louisa was 19, she married James W. LLOYD, son of Samuel LLOYD & Henrietta HOWE, in Lawrence Co., IN. Born on 20 Mar 1820 in Frederick Co., Virginia. James W. died in IN in 1862, he was 41.  She and her husband are buried in the Little Flock Cemetery in Sullivan Co., IN.  Picture on left of her portion of the stone with her name on it.
