A standard History of Georgia and Georgians by Lucian Lamar Knight:

The parents of Judge Ray, back in County Donegal, Ireland, were David Ray and his wife, whose maiden name was Lucy Atchison. They lived at Balla Davit in County Donegal. During the long period of his residence at Newnan, besides being a prominent member of the bar at that place, Judge Ray had extensive plantation interests in that vicinity and was a large grower of cotton.

He was married December 25, 1833, to Bethenia Gilliam Lavender, a descendant of Capt. John Knowles of Jamestown, Virginia, who came from England to the Virginia Colony in 1663, and located at Jamestown. Capt. John Knowles had a daughter named Bethenia who married William Giles, the ancestor of Gov. William B. Giles, of Virginia. Governor Giles and wife had a daughter named Mary who married Thomas Hardin and they in turn had a daughter named Susannah who married Capt. Charles Ellis an officer of the King's Militia of Albermarle County, Virginia. Captain Ellis and wife had a daughter named Edith, who married Devereux Gilliam, the latter being a nephew of the Rev. Devereux Jarrett, a distinguished Episcopal minister of Virginia who was called "The Rising Star" of the Episcopal Church in that state, for the reason that the church was chiefly re-established by him after the close of the Revolutionary war.

Devereux Gilliam and his wife moved to Tennessee in 1787 and settled at the Junction of the Holstein and French Broad Rivers above Knoxville, where later a fort, known as Fort Gilliam, was erected to fight the Cherokee Indians. (See Ramsey's History of Tennessee.)

Devereux Gilliam and wife had a daughter named Mary, who married John Lavender, a native of Winchester, Virginia/ and son of George Michael Laubinger, a Pennsylvanian of German descent, who served in the Revolutionary war, and who was enrolled in that war under the name of Lavender.

It will be seen therefore that the name Lavender was originally spelled Laubinger. George Michael Laubinger, previous to the Revolutionary war, had been a soldier under General Forbes in the French and Indian war, and had contributed greatly to that officer 'a military achievements in that war. (See Henning's Statutes of Virginia.)

Mrs. Bethenia Lavender Ray, mother of Captain Ray, was a sister of George Michael Lavender, who became a pioneer resident of Floyd County, Georgia, and for whom Lavender Mountain was named. Mrs Ray died in 1867. Captain Ray was the fifth of six children born to Judge John Ray and wife, four daughters and two sons. Only one of these children is living. That is a daughter, namely, Mrs. Emmett Ray Lowe, of Atlanta. Capt. Lavender R. Ray was reared at Newnan, Georgia. When the Civil war broke out he was a student at the University of North Carolina, at Chapel Hill. He at once put aside his books and, upon returning home joined Company A, First Georgia Infantry, as a private. He was then but eighteen years of age. He served throughout the full four years of the war and at its close was a lieutenant and ordnance officer of the division of cavalry commanded

The below was taken from the plaque mounted on the end of the old church ruins:

“The land was given by Thomas Lord Fairfax by patent dated May 15, 1753 to David Dieterich, Jacob Seibert, Christophen Lambert and George Michael Laubinger, trustees "For the use of the people called Lutherans in the County of Frederick." The corner stone was laid April 1, 1765. Walls and roof completed in 1772. Fully completed in 1793. Destroyed by fire September 27, 1854.

The congregation was admitted to the Ministerium of Pennsylvania in 1762 and the Rev Carl Frederich Wildbahn was the first authorized minister. He was forced by the Indians, whose depredations interfered with his work and the building of a church, to retire to Conewango, PA. Only visiting ministers thereafter preached here. Among them Major-General the Rev Peter Muhlenberg of Woodstock VA until the Rev Christian Streit because them regular pastor on July 19, 1785. He had served as Chaplain of the 8th VA Regt Continental Line during the Revolution and was the only dissenting minister to hold the commission of Chaplain of Virginia troops. He is buried near the East wall of these ruins. During the Re volution the Church was used as barracks for American troops. The two bells in the tower were cast in Bremen, Germany and were the first to call people to worship in Winchester. One of the bells still serves the present congregation. The old church contained the first church organ in this community. Here in 1820 was organized the Synnod of Maryland and Virginia.

A document written in Latin, subscribed by the Rev Johann Caspar Kirchner, officiating minister Ludwig Adamus, scribe, and Antony Ludi, School Master, placed in the corner stone preserved the names of the founders. As follows: Thoas Schmidt, Nicolaus Schrach, Christoph Heuschel, DAvid Dieterich, Christoph Wetzel, Peter Helfenstein, Geo-Michael Laubinger, Heinrich Beker, Jacob Braun, Stephen Fraenchel, Christoph Altrith, Tobias Otto, Eberhard Dorig, Andreas Friedly, Christoph Heinz, Imanuel Buger, Dewald Hiegel, Jacob Trautwein, Joh Sigmond Haenli, Johannes Lemley, Johannes Lentz, Christian Schumacher, Michael Roger, Michael Warnig, Christoph Lambert, Samuel Wendel, Mihael Gluck, Julius Spickert, Balthaser Po, Jacob Koppenhaber, Heinrich Weller, Christian Newberger.

Notable contributors to the building fund were Col George William Fairfax, Col William Byrd III of Westover, and the Hon William Nelson of Yorktown.”

George Michael Laubinger, b. 1729, died 1781
Barbara Painter or Bender, b. 1755, died 1808

The name of George Michael Laubinger appears on a list of members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Winchester, VA, as one of the "Hearers and Founders of this Temple." The list of names was put in the church's cornerstone when it was built in the late 1700s. All were residents of Winchester at the time. No other information given.

Thanks, but I have that info, even a picture of the plaque & old church wall. He was Rosanna's father. George & Anna Barbara Bender (some changed this name to Painter) were married in Lancaster Co., Pa. & moved to Fred. Co.

He built the first "Glen Burnie" in 1738. He married Mary Rutherford in 1738 with whom he had children (1) Elizabeth (b. 1739), (2) James Jr. (b. 1741), (3) Mary (b. 1742), (4) John (b. 1743-44), and (5) Robert (b. 1747). He was a Colonel in the Frederick County militia and served with his friend Col. George Washington in the 1754 campaign against the French. He is buried in the family graveyard at Glen Burnie.
