Carolina Cradle – Settlement of the Northwest Carolina Frontier, 1747-1762
by Robert W. Ramsey

Chapter IV Growth of the Western Settlement, 1750-1751 – pg 55 ~ (I own this book)

While expansion of the Catawba settlement was thus taking place, the Irish settlement was growing even more rapidly. In addition to the Alexander and Allison families, at late twenty settlers entered upon the fertile fields and meandering creeks of what is today Rowan County. Before the end of 1750, George and John Cowan, Arthur Patten (or Patton), Archibald Hamilton, John Nisbet, Robert Tate, Lorentz Schnepp, and Peter Arndt had settled there. A year later appeared the names of Samuel Young, Robert McPherson, John Lynn, James Deacon (or Deason), David Fullerton, George Henry, Robert Harris, David Houston, and William, Charles, Samuel, and John Burnett.

Pg – 60

John, Andrew, and James Lynn (Linn) were originally inhabitants of Talbot or Queen Anne County, Maryland.68   John Lynn, probably a relative, was in the Shenandoah Valley before August, 1746, on a tract of land located between the Augusta County courthouse and Tinkling Spring Presbyterian Church.69. James Lynn (designated as “architectus”) appears on record there in August, 1747, and Andrew Lynn three years later.70

John Lynn went to North Carolina in 1751 and bought 312 acres from George Cathey in February of the following year.71 This transaction was a rather significant one, because Lynn sold twelve of these acres early in 1753 to a “Congregation known by the Congregations belonging to ye Lower Meeting house between the Yadkin River and the Catawba River adhering to a Minister licensed from a Presbytery belonging to the old Synod of Philadelphia.”72 This was the origin of Thyatira Presbyterian Church. It is possible that James and Andrew accompanied John Lynn to Carolina in 1751, for both obtained land there in the spring of 1753.73 In any event, both John and Andrew Lynn proceeded to the “Waxhaw Settlement” where Andrew died before the spring of 1762.74

The Burnett’s did not remain long in Granville district. Like John Lynn and Felix Kennedy, they moved on to the Waxhaw settlement, where Samuel Burnett served with Kennedy in Pickens’ militia company.94

Linn ~

This family came to Fayette county from Virginia and the first survey of lands in Fayette county under the law of 1769 was made to Andrew Linn , August 22, 1769. This tract of two hundred and forty-nine and a half acres was in what are now Redstone and Jefferson townships and was called Crab-Tree Bottom. Other surveys were made to Andrew Linn as follows: "To Andrew Linn in right of Nathan Linn , two hundred ninety-two and a half acres called 'Contention,' situated on the east side of the Monongahela river, in the new purchase, Bedford county, and surveyed August 25, 1769, by order of survey No. 492, dated April 3, 1769 " and "To Andrew Linn, in right of Thomas Pearce, one hundred thirty and a half acres, called 'Purchase,' situated on the east side of the Monongahela river, in the new purchase, Bedford county, and surveyed August 26, 1769, by order of survey 1768, dated April 3, 1769." Andrew Linn was the son of the emigrant from Ireland, and was a soldier in the Colonial army during the revolutionary war.  He made several attempts to settle west of the Allegheny Mountains , and was as often harassed and driven back by the native Indians. He was at last successful and lived to see wide-spreading, well cultivated fields taking the place of the forests, which had once echoed with the crack of the musket and the deadly hum of the speeding arrow. He married and had issue.

Linn

(II) Isaac , son of Andrew Linn, was born in Fayette county, Pennsylvania, in 1774. He was a farmer during the earlier part of his life, but after moving to Fayette county purchased two hundred acres and erected a mill thereon, doing all the grinding for the farmers living in the vicinity of what is now Linn Station. In the war of 1812 he attained the rank of captain in the American army. His war record is a long list of brave deeds and courageous actions. His intrepidity under fire was the pride and envy of the regiment and his personal safety was granted scant respect by him when he was given the opportunity to be of aid to any one at his own risk. He was a Whig in politics and extremely influential in all public affairs, in which he took a keen and active interest. His interest in religious matters was as strong as in political questions and he and his wife were true "pillars of the Baptist church," a reputation that is often prodigally bestowed upon mere churchgoers.

"According to records, he was here in 1727. He and ? Lewis, William Lewis, ? Brooke Jr., James Mills and Beverley Robinson petitioned for 50,000 acres in Virginia. Owned land in Frederickburg, Northern Neck, Culpepper and branches on "James" and "Cow Pasture" Rivers. Secured 1530 acres (in two tracts) in Prince William County from Isaac Savage of Boston, Massachusetts in the early 1750s. Owned land in Orange County which he farmed with many slaves.

A major in the Virginia Militia. On Feb. 7, 1753, he took oath as Capt. of the Independent Company of Foot, composed of "The Gentlemen Inhabitants of the town of Fredericksburg, Virginia." During this service, son-in-law, John Dent, was Capt. of the same company.

He had no male children.

Doctor to George Washington.

Court records of Augusta County, Virginia dated Nov. 1751 show that Dr. John sued his brother, Dr. William for an ? cause: "Glisterpipe vs Gilisterpipe, alias, Irish Doctor William Lynn of Fredericksburg vs Irish Doctor John Lynn of Augusta...

At the time of his will in 1758, Fauquier Co had not yet been formed from Prince William County, Virginia. Executors were Col. Fielding Lewis and Col. John Thornton. (Lewis married to Elizabeth (Betty) Washington, sister of Gen. George Washington. Thornton may have married another Washington. This will refers to brother, Charles, in Ireland and to Charles' oldest son, William. However, it fails to say where this nephew is located. Also reference to "kinswoman," Margaret Lynn, married to John Stuart and "kinsman," Moses, as remaining in Ireland.

Alt Name: Charles LYNN

Charles is referred to in the will of brother, Dr. William Lynn, of Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, Virginia in 1757 as living in Ireland, and his son, William Sr., is also mentioned in this will.

Lynn researchers have concluded son William immigrated to America and settled in Prince William County, Virginia near his aunts and uncles. Each arrived in the 1750s, each acquired land near Powell's Run and farmed there in the 1760s, each was a practicing "Primitive Baptist," and each was illiterate and thus signed documents with an X, and all died at about the same time. Each had children about the same age, and each named one son John. The names of the children were similar and also indicate an association with the other Laird Lynn descendants in the region. In common with the Laird Lynn line, they used the same surname spelling. There were numerous presumed first-cousin intermarriages with the other Lynn’s of the area.

Jurymen--...John Linn

John Lynn was in Queen Anne County, Maryland in 1730 and in Augusta County, Virginia by 1746. He sued his brother, Dr. William Lynn, there in 1751. This may be why John, unlike his other relatives, is not mentioned in William's will. Court record of November 1751 indicate a lawsuit between Dr. William Lynn of Fredericksburg and "Irish Doctor John Lynn" of Augusta County. Apparently this dispute remained unresolved, John left the county.

He attended the Tinkling Spring Church near Staunton, Virginia--also other Lynns, Patton and Prestons.

In 1749 John Lynn, Jr., and his brothers James and Andrew were in court there--John Jr. received land, James and Andrew witnessed. ALT. BIRTH: 1685 (unlikely if parents' birth dates are correct)

In the above 1820 Census, I wonder if the Hannah Shelton is Hannah Yates, who married William Shelton Sr. and had, among others, our Elizabeth Shelton who married Jonathan Lynn.  Hannah was born circa 1740 and would have been over 60 yrs old in 1820, and this Hannah (above) would fit in that category.  I believe this is Hannah Yates.  Living nearby are her family; George is her deceased husband's brother, and I believe the Abraham nearby is her grandson through her son William, as well as Elijah Shelton brother to Abraham.

William Linn above could be brother to our Jonathan Lynn, with William being born around the turn of the century, and would be around 20 yrs old in 1820.  John Linn, Sr., could possibly be our Jonathan's father, and was born circa 1766 and had Jonathan circa 1801.  He would have been 64 or a bit younger in 1820, so I think this could be him.  His wife, Jean Penny, is not there if this is him.  I wonder if one of his sons and his wife and their children are living with them?  It looks like our Jonathan Lynn, born 1801, is living next door to his father and brothers, with his wife Elizabeth Shelton.  Elizabeth's mother Hannah is nearby, as well as her brothers Abraham and Elijah as well as her father's brother, her uncle George.  Her father, William Shelton, Sr., must have died before 1820.

In the above census, we have Elijah Shelton, brother to our Elizabeth Shelton who married  Jonathan Lynn, along with wife Elizabeth and daughters Susan, Sarah, and Agnes.  If my William is indeed a son of Jonathan and Elizabeth, and this is them, then I am confused where my William Wallace Lynn is.

Next door to Jonathan is William M. Linn who could be uncle to our Jonathan Lynn, who would have been born in the latter half of the 18th century and would be in the 10-50 age range in 1830.  Next to William is John Linn who I believe is Jonathan's brother.  He would have also been born around the turn of the century or as early as 1794 and would be in the 30-40 category.  In his household is a 60-70 yr old male and 40-50 yr old female in addition to his wife and two daughters.  Who could this elderly couple be?  They could be John's parents, Jonathan Lynn and his wife Jean Penny.

Next to John Linn is Elizabeth Ramsey, I believe she could be Elizabeth Lynn, sister to Jonathan Lynn above, and daughter of John Lynn and Jean Penny.

Next is Nancy Linn, who I believe is Nancy Ann Ramsey who married James Lynn, who is brother to Jonathan Lynn.  James must have died as Nancy is the head of household.

I don't know who John Below is, and don't know if he is connected to the family in any way or not, or is just living between them all.

Last is William Linn, who I think is Jonathan Lynn's brother who was born around the turn of the century and would have been in the 30-40 age range in 1830.

In the above census, we have John Linn, 70-80 with a female 60-70, I believe these could be John Lynn Sr. and his wife Jean Penny.  It looks like they might have a granddaughter living with them as well.  Living next door to them is Elias Linn, who was born 1810-1820; I'm not sure who he is.  Nancy Linn next in line could be the Nancy Ann Ramsey who married James Linn and he has obviously died.  Jn Lynn next in line could be anyone's son, just like the William R. Lynn next in line.  I wonder if the R. is for Riley?  I'm not sure who Anna Lynn is, I couldn't read the name very well, and Anna was what it looked like.

In the Census listed above, I believe the William Lynn above is our Jonathan's brother, who was probably born around the turn of the century (1800) and would be in the 40-50 age range.  It looks like his wife is there also and they have 7 children.  There are several Lynn's listed in the 1830 Henderson County census that I will have to review more closely.  I find no Shelton's in the 1830 Henderson County Census.

There is a James Lynn listed in the 1830 Henderson County as follows:

One Male under five, one Male 5-10, one Male 10-15, 9 Males 20-30, 6 Males, 30-40 and one Male 80-90.  Obviously there are at least two families living in this household.

Also in the house:  One Female under five, one Female 5-10, One Female, 20-30

I believe this James is could be the brother to our line Jonathan, and with so many males living in this household, I don't doubt that our Jonathan is living there too.  He would have been in the 30-40 age range, and would fit in this group.  Some of other brothers could very likely be living there too.  Note: for all these people, 23 total, there was only one female in the age range of 20-30, and the other two were young.  She must have had a time keeping things up with 23 men!

In the 1820 Henderson County Census there is one Lynn listed.

Jonathan Lynn and Elizabeth "Betsy" Shelton had the following children according to information obtained from the 1850 Hardin County, IL Census

Following are the notes I'm collecting on this line.

In the 1840 Christian County Census, there is a William Lynn living near our Thomas Lindley, he has the following in his house:

1-1-1-1-1-0-1-0-0    0-1-1-0-0-0-1-0-0 = 9 Total

1820 Hopkins County Census (unfortunately, the census transcription I have was done in alpha order versus how people were listed in the actual census which helps to determine other family through the neighbors listed.)

Pitts Lynn (1 Male under 10); (1 Male 26-45); (4 F Under 10); (2 F 10-16); (1 F 26-46)

James Lynn:   2 Males under five, 1 Male 5-10; 2 Males 10-15; 1 Male 15-20; 1 Male 20-30; 1 Male 40-50; 1 Female 5-10; 1 Female 30-40.

1830 Hopkins County Census, transcribed in alpha order:

Pitts Lynn:  (1 Male Under 5)  (1 Male 40-50); (2 F 5-10); (2 F 10-15); (1 F 40-50)

James Lynn:  (2 M under 5); (1 M 5-10); (2 M 10-15); (1 M 15-20); (1 M 20-30); (1 M 40-50); (1 F 5-10); (1 F 30-40)

I can not find the above James or Pitts in the 1840 Census, but there are several others now listed, possibly sons none of the age of the James and Pitts above.

1840 Hopkins County Census:

Asa Lynn:  (2 M 10-15); (1 M 30-40); (2 F to 5); (3 F 5-10);
(1 F 10-15); (1 F 20-30).  Asa is living within 7 "houses" of Isaiah Crabtree; another line of ours.  John Woodruff is also living in the area.

William R. Lynn:  (1 M 5-10); (1 M 15-20); (1 M 30-40); (2 F to 5); (1 F 20-30)

David Lynn:  (1 M 5-10); (1 M 30-40); ( 1 F to 5); (2 F 5-10); (1 F 30-40)

William Lynn:  ( 1 M to 5); (1 M 5-10); (1 M 20-30); (1 F to 5): (1 F 20-30); (1 F 40-50)

John W. Lynn:  (1 M to 5); (1 M 20-30); (2 F to 5); (1 F 20-30)

The second William and John W. were living next door to each other.

Hello Catherine: There are Lynn/Linn's in the Henderson County 1820 Census (Union County was created from Henderson County in 1811) It names a Hannah Shelton, Abraham Shelton and George and Elijah Shelton, William Linn, John Linn Sr, James Linn and Jonathan Linn.

The August term of 1853 in Hardin County IL says Elizabeth was granted a divorce and that Jonathan was a non-resident of the state of Ill at that time.  Jonathan was a timber man in the state of Kentucky near Caseyville. (William Wallace Lynn was their (Jonathan and Elizabeth) first born son who died in 1821 when he was about 21 yrs old and is from who I descend).
