Our Miller Line

I believe we descend from Simon Miller of early Spotsylvania and Essex Counties in Virginia.  The first portion is how I propose the line goes; but this is just my theory, nothing proven, but plenty of circumstantial evidence and naming and migration patterns.

His will dated Feb. 16, 1679 is filed at the Essex County, Court House.  It was proved in Rappahannock County, , Virginia May 2, 1684

Margaret (?) may have had two children by Simon Miller her second husband. The will of James Scott probated in King George Co. 4 January 1722/3 names three aunts, one is Margaret Amon, Isabella Triplett and Margaret Taliferro and his Uncle Hugh French. This suggest to me first that James Scott's mother was probably Mary French who would have been a half sister to Isabella and Margaret Aron [if she is the Margaret Miller named in Symon's will] And Hugh and Margaret Taliaferro were his full blooded relations by Margaret [who was not nee Gaines] and Hugh French.

Here is an excerpt from a segment of the book I am working on.

John further directed that he be buried next to his first wife, Martha. He named his children, including a son Anthony, who is identified in the will of Simon Miller, as Margaret's child. Prosser’s will was presented for probate 30 June 1677. The exact date of Prosser's death is not known. The family lived on the frontier of [Old] Rappahannock County, where there was an Indian massacre on 25 January 1675-76. There was a higher than usual number of wills submitted for probate in [Old] Rappahannock County, in 1677.

It is felt by many that this can be explained by Bacon's Rebellion. However, Dr. Lorena S. Walsh in a letter to the compiler 15 February 1995, thinks there was an epidemic in the region that caused this increase in deaths, because the phenomenon occurred in Maryland also.

It can not be established exactly when Margaret married Simon Miller. Not only is exact date of John Prosser’s death not known, but neither is the date of Symon Miller's first wife. Margaret probably did not remain a widow too long. A widow with property did not have a hard time finding a husband. Simon had several motherless children, and Margaret had at least one of her own, and three stepchildren to care for.

Symon [sic] Miller, boatwright sold four hundred and forty acres to Roger Cleveland, November 1679. Margaret signed with an M for her mark. Thomas Hoskins Warner in his History of [Old] Rappahannock County, Virginia, has the following to say about Symon Miller:

...During the summer and fall of 1676, Major Simon Miller, who was in command of Bacon's forces in the upper Rappahannock...devoted his efforts to fighting the Indians and keeping them under control. His lands lay on the south branch of Puemendson Run, sometimes called Mill Creek: and later on he lived on Golden Vale Creek above Port Royal. Miller's lands adjoined those of Cadwallader Jones and were within the area of the massacre of January 25, 1675-76. So great was the service of Symon Miller in protecting the settlers when their homes and lives were imperiled by the red men that even his nominal enemies joined with his friends in petitioning the Governor to look upon him with an eye of favor.

Cadwallader Jones wrote when it appeared Miller might be hung, along with others who participated in Bacon's Rebellion, ...because of the good he hath done to protect this section from the Indians and keeping them under control.

Simon Miller wrote his will 16 February 1679. He was seven and thirty years old then. In it he lists the following children; Simon, William, John, Susanna, Isabella, and Margaret. He mentioned Anthony Prosser and called him his wife's son. Later on in his will he included provisions for the sons of Mr. Prosser

The Rebellion known as Bacon's Rebellion had it's beginnings in 1675 and was ended early in 1677 in Virginia, however, the year of the actual conflict was in 1676. Sometimes referred to as the precursor to the American Revolution, it is ironic that it was exactly 100 years before a rebellion would be launched that succeeded in independence from Great Britain. Listed below are the names of over 100 individuals who took part in the Rebellion. There are, without a doubt, many hundreds not listed herein. * Notes individuals executed for their participation in Bacon's Rebellion.

John Miller was son of Capt. Simon Miller. It may be that John, son of the John, who died 1743, was father of Thomas. This John married Susannah and moved into Caroline County, in 1736. The loss of Caroline's will and deed books prevents our having a list of his children, hence Thomas can't be positively identified as his son.

Thomas has no connection with James Miller of Port Royal, whose children can be established from the will in Caroline's loose papers, Archives Division, Virginia State Library, Richmond.

John Miller, was the father of: (all mentioned in his will)

i Symon/Simon Miller, md. ?
ii John Miller, possibly md. a Susannah
iii William Miller
iv Thomas Miller, married Dorothy Mathews
v Isabella Miller
vi Margaret Miller
vii Francis Miller,
viii Mary Miller, md. George Green

Thomas Miller, was living in King and Queen County, VA, and or Essex, there is no proof of birth year, this is a guess.  He married Dorothy Matthews in 1758 in Kingston Parish, Essex Co., Virginia.  Based on their marriage year, I am 'guessing' they were born around 1740.  Dorothy's father, John Matthews of Gloucester Co., VA had a will dated 1766; proved 1767, Williamsburg, names his daughter, Dorothy Miller.

The Miller Bible provided many of the birth, marriage and death records.

There is a 'Lavinia Miller' who mentions her 'Uncle Anthony' in her will in Essex County, VA.  She is referring to her uncle in Kentucky, see below.

There is a marriage record between a Thomas Miller and Dorothy Matthews in 1758 in Essex County, Virginia, Kingston Parish Records.  She was the daughter of John Matthews .  Her mother was Dorothy Buckner, his first wife.  Please note that this is NOT proven and is speculation based on someone's work passed down in a family from the 1800s.  All the names 'fit' but there has been no proof so far.

The records are very conflicting about Dorothy Matthews ancestry.  There is the following record from Virginia County Records Volume III, Williamsburg Wills, being Transcription from the Original files at the Chancery Court of Williamsburg, Edited by William Armstrong Crozier:

MATTHEWS, JOHN, Kingston Par., Gloucester Co., 1 April, 1776; 5 Feb., 1767.  Daughter DOROTHY MILLER; dau. Ann SCROSBY; son Rev John Matthews; son Richard; son Edward, son Robert; James Scrosby husband of my dau. Ann Scrosby; mentions wife (no name given).  Exrs. Sons-in-law Thomas Miller and Richard Gregory and son Rev. John Matthews.  Wit.  Robert Dalgliesh, Ann Jones, John Flippen.

and this record from the same above mentioned book:

BOHANNON, AMBROSE, Parish So. Farnham, Essex Co., 24 Feb., 1776; 15 Dec., 1800.  Entire estate to brother Joseph Bohannon.  Wit.  Thomas Miller, William Miller, Dorothy Miller.

So from the above record, first one, it seems apparent that the Dorothy Matthews Miller who married Thomas Miller in 1758, was indeed the daughter of a John Matthews of Kingston Parish, Gloucester Co., VA.

Thomas died after September 15, 1809 in Fauquier Co, VA?  he made a deposition in Fauquier County on this date and he was over 90 at that time.  (I am not sure where this comes from).  Here are my Matthew/Mathew.

Editor's Note: In the mid-1930s The Louisville Herald-Post conducted a genealogy column featuring materials sent in by its readers. We thought our readers would find the column interesting. We will reprint parts from this column each month. Because they were printed some sixty years ago, we do not have any other facts except those given below. We hope our readers enjoy the new Kentucky Kinfolks column.

Miller  --

Jane and Nancy Miller, daughters of Thomas Miller, of King and Queen County, deceased, intending to go to Kentucky, gave power of attorney to their brother, Anthony Miller, to sell their share of their father's and mother's estate. Thomas Miller died between April 15, 1796, when for love and affection, he conveyed to his son, John Miller, land in Essex County, on the road from Rappahannock to Dunkirk; and November 10, 1806, Jane and Nancy made the above power of attorney to their brother.

Thomas was almost certainly a grandson (my note:  I think he is a son of John Miller) of the John Miller who died and his testate in Essex County, 1743.

From Beth, who descends from Richard Miller:

As for how I proved Richard’s birth date, it’s based on numerous things:

The 1810, 1830 and 1840 Federal Censuses for King & Queen County

1810 Essex: Richard Miller b. bet 1766-1784; # of children match my records and ages work. Neighbors are John Mann, Thomas Mann (wife’s maiden name was Mann), James Webb (friend and family lawyer on numerous docs and wills), Caty Banks (mentioned in Robert Mann will as his daughter), __ Davis (Richard’s daughter married Peter Davis), Dicey Rose (Richard Miller testified for Dicey Rose to get Rev War pension for husband Geo Rose).

o 1830 K&Q: Richard Miller b bet 1770-1780; # of children and ages work; neighbors are also familiar to me including Churchill Anderson who is mentioned in the will of Richard’s daughter, Lavinia.

o 1840 K&Q: Richard Miller b bet 1770-1780; living alone (wife died; children are adults)

The BEST information I have, after finding the censuses and checking out the neighbors, is the testimony for Dicey Rose on footnote.com. It gives his exact birth date (which fits with the censuses), his marriage date, his occupation and his father’s occupation. I pasted my transcription below.

This is to certify that I am now seventy five years of age – that I was born in the County of Essex and State of Virginia on the 9th day of July 1772 and was acquainted with George Rose – deceased of the aforesaid County, was born and raised within a very short distance from him, and know that he enlisted sometime during the Revolutionary War for the term of during the war and served to its close, but I cannot say under what officer he enlisted or served unless it was Capt John Webb who was at that time a recruiting officer and kept an office at a place called Quarles Tavern in the aforesaid County of Essex; nor can I say at what period of the war he enlisted or how many years he was in service.

I was not more than some four or five years or perhaps six of age when he enlisted and went away when he returned from service at the close of the war I was a good stout lad large enough and did sometimes go to mill for my father. Say about ten or twelve years old. I was raised a near neighbor to Mr. Rose and was frequently at the house of his family and after I became grown, I worked at the carpenters trade with the said Rose and I have often heard him speaking of the war and of what he had felt and seen while in service.

In some short time after he returned from the service he married a lady by the name of Delphi Taylor who lived but a few years and he then married for his second wife a lady by the name of Dicey Martin of the said County of Essex and who is yet alive and is still his widow. I cannot recall in what month or year he was married to his last wife but I know that they were married several years before myself and I was married in the year seventeen hundred and ninety-five. There were several other men of my acquaintances who enlisted in the same war, and about the same time that Mr. Rose did of whom, as well as I now remember was Carter Croxton, Robert Chapman, Moses Nunn, William Hodges and William Crow, all of whom I believe as enlisted for the term of during the war, except Carter Croxton and William Crow those two I think only enlisted for three years and they all went to the North, except Crow who went to the South.

John Croxton was taken prisoner by the Hessians and was always called Hessian John. Mr. Rose did not live many years after the Revolution but I cannot now state when he died. He, however, died some thirty odd years ago leaving his wife quite poor.

Will of Albert Gallatin Meriwether
Hickman County, Kentucky
Will Book C, page 461

In the name of God, Amen. I, A. G. Meriwether, of the county of Hickman, being of sound mind and disposing memory, for which I thank God, and calling to mind the uncertainty of human life, and desiring to dispose of all such worldly estate as it has pleased God to bless me with, I give an bequeath the same in the following manner, to wit.

Item 1, I wish all of may just debts to be paid in the following manner. In the first place, I wish all of the money that is due me to be collected as soon as may be, and applied toward the payment of my debts. Also as soon as convenient after the crop is gathered, I wish that be sold and the proceeds to be applied in that way.  And if that should not be sufficient to pay off my debts, I wish my executors hereinafter mentioned, to see my creditors and endeavor to get them to wait until the balance of what I may be owing can be made from the products of my farms. And if they are willing to wait, for all industrious means to be used to make the balance as soon as possible and pay them off, but if they are unwilling to wait, I want them to sell such of my property as they may think best and pay off my debts. And in order that money may be raised to pay off my debts, I wish that my farms may be carried as nearly as can be in the manner they have been doing, and the crop sold and applied in that way.

Item 2, I give unto my wife Maria Catherine Meriwether, during her lifetime, the farm on which I now live, containing two quarter sections of land, together with all of the household and kitchen furniture, farming utensils; also cattle, hogs and sheep; also sufficiency of horses and mules and negroes … that she shall select, such of the negroes as she may see fit for that purpose.

Item 3, I give to my two sons William Winston and Robert Miller Meriwether, all of the tract of land in Madrid Bend, which I bought from Da Norstreet, to be equally divided between them according to quantity, so as to give each one of them an equal front on the river, and to run back to the back line. It is my wish for Winston to have the upper half of the land next to Mrs. Donaldson’s, and for Robert to have the lower half next to Mr. Isler’s land. It is my wish and desire that Robert should get some suitable person to take a lease upon his part, and have a small improvement made at the lower corner of his part of the river bank, and an orchard planted out, and that the  clearing be mostly done in the burn across the slough.

It is my wish also that the stock of every kind, farming utensils, and household and kitchen furniture, be equally divided between them, and that they carry on the farm as nearly as they can to help pay off what I am owing, and educating the younger children, and they shall one of them stay there, and one of them on the farm with their mother alternately as they have been in the habit of doing. And when they arrive at the age of twenty-one years, if there should be more cleared land and better houses on upon Winston’s part than there in on Robert’s, that Winston shall pay Robert one half of the difference that may be, and pay for one half of as many fruit trees as there may be on his part, and Robert shall be entitled to one half of the fruit on Winston’s part until Winston shall have gotten his portion of the trees for Robert, and that they get to bearing.

Item 4th, After the death of my wife, I give and bequeath to my son James David, the farm, stock of cattle, horses, hogs, farming utensils, household and kitchen furniture given to my wife during her lifetime.

Item 5th, I give unto my daughters Hannah Ann, Maria Catherine, Sarah Chew and Harriet Winston Meriwether, and the legal heirs of their body, all of my land on White River in the state of Indiana; also all of the tract of land that I bought from Mr. E. W. Nevill in Madrid Bend; also the quarter section of land in Fulton county on the Obion, in which Loua stays, to be equally divided between them.

Item 6, I give unto my sons William Winston, Robert Miller and James David, and to my daughters, Hannah Ann, Maria Catherine, Sarah Chew and Harriet Winston, and the legal heirs of their bodies, at the death of my wife, all my negroes, except those given to my daughter Edna Casandra Elizabeth, to be equally divided between them as they become of age or marry.

Item 7, should the child be born and live with which my wife is now pregnant, it is my wish and desire that each of my above named children have taken from the property that I have bequeathed unto them, from each one, an equal part, to make its property equal with the others, and if a boy, I wish him named Albert Gallatin.

Item 8, I give unto my son William Winston, my small rifle gun.

Item 9, I give unto my son Robert Miller, my watch.

Item 10, I give unto my son James David, my double barrel shotgun.

Item 11, I give unto my daughter Edna Cassandra Elizabeth Robinson, five negroes, to wit, Mary and her four children; also the northwest quarter of Section 14 Township 2 Range West, containing 160 acres of land, more or less.

Item 12, I give unto my above named children, all of my other property whatsoever and whatever I may be entitled to from my father’s estate. And lastly, I do hereby appoint my wife Maria Catherine, Executrix, and my brother Thomas W. Meriwether, Executor of this my last will and testament, until my two sons, William Winston and Robert Miller, shall arrive at the age of 21 years, and then I do appoint them as my executors to this my last will and testament, hereby revoking all other or former will or testaments by me heretofore made. Also my wish and desire is that the County Court of Hickman County shall not require either of my above named Executors or Executrix, to give security. In witness whereof, I hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal, this 13th day of June 1851.

ii Richard Miller, b. 9th day of July 1772, died 1845, married Frances Mann and had a daughter named Lavinia per his brother Anthony's will.  They had Baldwin Buckner Miller who as a doctor.

A Richard Miller Married Mary "Polly" Mundell per her father's will, John Mundell, below.

Will of John Mundell ~ to dtr Nally, horse of same value as given to other children; to youngest son John, horse; balance of estate to be sold, money first for John's education, then one-third to wife Jane, balance to children James, Andrew, Magaretha, wife of John Thomson, Polly, wife of Richard Miller, Sarah, Nally and John.  Executor:  John Miller  Witnesses:  Thomas Stafford, Bartlett Asher, Charles Wilson [B1, p191]

iii Robert Miller, born 1774, died 1863 (our line) From "The Lawyers and Lawmakers of Kentucky, H. Levin, The Lewis Publishing Co., Chicago, 1897.

Robert Miller, a native of King and Queen county, Virginia, left his native state in 1796, and, accompanied by his twin brother, Buckner Miller, made his way to Kentucky on foot, coming through Cumberland Gap. He settled at Lower Ponds, Jefferson county, where his remaining days were passed, his death occurring in 1863, when he had reached the advanced age of eighty-nine years.
iv Buckner Miller' born 1774, twin; had daughter Donatha Jane Miller (it think this should be Dorothy, which is a family name).  Thomas was deceased by March 12, 1818 according to Anthony's will; and had son Thomas B. Miller.  The inventory in this paragraph is from Mercer Co., KY, but it's in 1838, so I'm not sure if it's this Thomas Miller or his son.  'Our' Thomas Miller is mentioned as a brother in Anthony's will, but Anthony indicates that he is already deceased when he, Anthony, writes his will in 1818.  A probate could have been delayed until the children were older if he died when they were young, which would have been the case, with Thomas being born in the late 1700s and dying before 1818.  According to a suit in court, Thomas E. Miller, had Thomas E., Robert, Anthony, Samuel, Catherine and Susan.  Catherine md. a Radford, and Susan md an Allen.

I just found a cemetery that is east of the Miller/Alsop Cemetery where there is a Robert and some of his children.  It says that Anthony is there as well.

Watterson Trail (old Jeffersontown Road)

"This cemetery is located on the old Jeffersontown Road, about 2 miles east of Middletown. Chenoweth Run begins here on spot 150 yards east of old home (still standing) with approx. 8 graves, the condition very poor. This old log home is the Dr. Robert Miller place. I have yet to find his grave. He was a doctor in Floydsburg, Kentucky in 1830, and was chairman of Floydsburg's first board of trustees. They met in Miller's home in Floydsburg, on 30 Jan 1830 and chartered the town. The Millers are not here but the Woodsmalls are. The Woodsmalls are an Oldham County family. My father once owned the Woodsmall place, one mile south of LaGrange." - Robert Foster Johnson. Additional names were added to this cemetery listing on 08/16/06 from a listing found in "Middletown's Days and Deeds; The Story of 150 Years of Living in an Old Kentucky Town" book. Hence, the listing of the Miller burials, even though the stones are obviously now gone.

Generation Two

Robert Miller, born April 6, 1774, VA and Cassandra Moore in 1783 KY, had the following children. I've pieced them together from different sources and census records, etc.  From "The Lawyers and Lawmakers of Kentucky, H. Levin, The Lewis Publishing Co., Chicago, 1897", comes this:

Robert Miller, a native of King and Queen county, Virginia, left his native state in 1796, and, accompanied by his twin brother, Buckner Miller, made his way to Kentucky on foot, coming through Cumberland Gap. He settled at Lower Ponds, Jefferson county, where his remaining days were passed, his death occurring in 1863, when he had reached the advanced age of eighty-nine years.

Robert Miller was believed to have come to Kentucky in 1786, as found in a biographical sketch of Shackelford Miller, a descendant (hmm which differs from another source, he would have only been 12 yr old in 1786).  Robert Miller, a twin to Buckner was born in King Queen County, VA, April 6, 1774 and died July 2, 1863.

A story has been carried down through the family that his sister was married to the first governor of the state of Virginia (my note:  I looked up who the first Governor of VA and it was Patrick Henry and he had two wives; Sarah Shelton and Dorothea Dandridge; unless Dorthea (a family name) is a widow of a Dandridge fellow, this story is not substantiated, but further research needs to be done.  Robert and Cassandra (May 18, 1783-Aug 3, 1846) were married Nov 1, 1804.  She was the daughter of Col James Frances Moore.  On October 31, 1804, a month before her marriage James F. Moore conveyed to Cassandra Moore 250 acres of land purchased by him from a 1500 acre tract of John Kemp, part of this land bordered Pond Creek.  Col. James Frances Moore had also given his other daughter, Zerulah, a tract of land before her marriage to John Jones.  The property of the two sisters joined one another.

A story was related to me by a descendant, Miss Anna Miller, about one of the women in the Miller family, believed to be Cassandra.  Cassandra traveled from Virginia on horseback, accompanied by a colored family retainer.  She carried a china bowl, and she had a cottonwood branch with which she switched the horse.  When she arrived here she planted the branch and it grew to be an immense cottonwood tree.  This farm was then known as Cottonwood Home.  A cyclone uprooted the tree about 60 years ago.  The bowl Cassandra carried to her new home with her, still remains at the home place.

Slaves helped to operate this farm, and after the parents died the land was divided between the children.  The original farm home burned around 1820, except for a back portion.  The house was immediately rebuilt, within the walls of the former structure, and still remains on the property, occupied by descendants of the original owners.  This house is soundly constructed with thick brick walls.  The brick was burned and made right on the farm while the family and slaves were rebuilding.  In later years a star support was added to the brick wall.

On the first page of the large family Bible, where part of this information was obtained, the following was inscribed:  "Robert Miller Book, Purchased of the Rev. Peter Duncan Feb 28, 1846, Price $2.46."  Any one could imagine how expensive a large Bible would be today.

Robert Miller gave 1/2 acre of land to Methodist Episcopal Church according to survey dated Jane 28, 1843.

Children from the marriage of Robert and Cassandra were:  (my note:  Mill Creek Church, Jefferson Co., KYI have more children than this from Anthony's will)  Buckner Miller (Aug 1805); James Frances Miller (May 16, 1807); Dorothy Mathews Miller (Feb 13, 1809; Elizabeth Miller (Nov 1, 1810 - Sept 18, 1831); she married Darrell E. Jones; Edna  Miller (Oct 15, 1812 - Sept 29, 1814), she married Albert Merriweather; Robert Hatton Miller  (March 1818 - Aug 1834); Phillip Taylor Miller (Sept 5, 1820 - Sept 29, 1888), married Diana Frances Samuels; John Miller (Feb 18, 1824 - April 18, 1874), Shackelford Miller, a judge, and Neville, a former mayor of Louisville, were grandchildren of John Miller.

Children of Robert and Cassandra:

i

Buckner Miller, born Aug, 1805
.  From Mercer County, Kentucky Marriage Records, 1800-1830, Vol II & III is lists Buckner Miller married Comfort D.  Worthington on April 13, 1830.  From a family history, it states he was married three times, one wife was Jane Smith; they had Mary Elizabeth Smith Miller, she married Henry Embry Creel.  They had Martha Creel who married John Galt; Buckner Miller Creel who married Nancy Baird Thompson, they had i Mary Thompson CREEL, ii Nancy Thompson CREEL, iii Margaret Thompson CREE, iv Kate Thompson CREE, Paul Thompson CREEL, vi Buckner Miller Thompson Jr CREEL, was born 25 Mar 1896 and died 12 Jun 1921.

Buckner Miller is listed in the 1850 Louisville Ward 7, Jefferson Co., Census as follows:  He was born in KY, is 45 yrs old, he owns 2,500 acres and is a bricklayer.  His wife's name is Comfort, (she was born in 1814) he has children:  Margaret, 17, James M., 15, Mary C., 10, Ann E., 8/12 and Theodore, 7.    My note:  I can not find a dtr of Buckner's named Dorthea (yet) that is mentioned in his brother Anthony's will.  In an 1832 Louisville Directory he is listed as a bricklayer living on Walnut between 4th and 5th streets.  Our Pendergrast's were bricklayers and wonder if they learned it from the Millers or somehow that is how they became associated?

He is listed in the 1880 Jefferson Co., KY, Louisville, District 147 as 75 yrs old and with his wife, looks like 'C. D.', age 66, wife, Francis C. M. dtr, age 40 (I can't read what the name says, this page on the census is very poor, Julia Farqua, age 11, dtr, Mary Farqua, 9, dtr. then it looks like the relationship says brother, and it looks like Fruly, age 37 (born 1843), on this census he indicates his mother and father were both born in Virginia.  Robert does indicate on the 1850 census that he was born in VA, but I do believe Cassandra Moore, dtr of James Francis Moore and Elizabeth Higgins was born in KY, but I could be wrong.  Buckner died between 1880 and 1890 as his wife, Comfort V. Miller is listed as widow Buckner in an 1890 Louisville directory, and she is living b. 2106 W. Madison.  But now I see her, Comfort listed in an 1886 Directory living at 903 18th-boarder (I think it means she is a boarder) and is living alone.  This would mean Buckner died between 1880 and 1886).

Children of COMFORT WORTHINGTON and BUCKNER MILLER are:

i. James Tolley Miller, b. KY
ii. Margaret Stade Miller, b. KY
iii. Charlie Miller, b. KY
iv. Henry Miller, b. KY
v. Anna Miller, b. KY
vi. Julia Worthington Miller, b. KY
vii  Dorthea Miller (mentioned in Anthony's will)

Buckner Miller Allin, Sr., 1856-1924.  Spring Hill Cemetery, Mercer County, Kentucky

from The Harrodsburg Herald, Mercer County, Kentucky

Friday, January 25, 1924, b. 1857

Mr. Buckner Miller Allin, Sr., aged 67 years, died Tuesday night after a gradual decline of health for several years, caused by a partial stroke of paralysis.  Mr. Allin was a native of Mercer County, a son of the late George Allin and Susan Miller Allin, and is a descendant of a line of pioneers prominent in the development of Mercer County from its first settlement.  Mr. Allin was personally popular with all who knew him.  He was a man of upright principles and a warm heart, and was always on the side that favored the advancement of community interest.  For many years he was a prominent merchant here, being engaged in the grocery business, later he was in the internal revenue service for a long time, and after that was City School Tax Collector and Vital Statistician up to the time his failing health forced him from active business.

He was twice married, first to Miss Mattie Hudson and second to Miss Annie May Nooe, who survives him, together with three children, Mrs. Eben Hardin and Miss Mattie Miller Allin, by the first union, and Mr. B. M. Allin, Jr., by the second marriage.  His funeral was held Thursday morning at 10:30 at his home on Chestnut Street, conducted by his pastor, Rev. S. S. Daugherty, of the Presbyterian church, and Rev. L. E. Sellers, of the Christian church.  The interment was in Spring Hill Cemetery.

I am searching for the MILLER family who was from King and Queen Co, VA, and migrated to Jefferson Co, KY post-Rev. War, ca 1798-9. My lineage is from John MILLER b ca 1729 and Dorothy MATTHEWS b ca 1737, of K & Q Co.

Anthony Miller, born 5 Feb 1816, Jefferson co, KY -  Anthony married Ellen Camp, (sister to Mildred Camp whom his brother, James Francis, married), born 14 Feb, 1821 in Jefferson Co., KY, they married 4 July 1842, Jefferson Co.  Children:  Cassandra, born abt 1847, Myra Gray, born 6 March 1849, Anthony, born abt 1854, Weedon C., born abt 1856 and William W. born about 1859, all born in Jefferson Co., KY.  Anthony died 21 April 1892 in Bullitt Co., KY.

This house was built in 1831 for Elizabeth Miller Jones.  It now has nine rooms, some partitions having been added, a two story brick house.  The bricks were burned on the farm and the attic is pegged with wood, no nails were used.  The front of this house faced the old Church Road and the back of the house was toward Valley Road.  The house was set on brick pillars, but in recent years a basement and end porch have been added.  At one time Dr. Boggess owned this property.  It is presently owned by the Willis Cloud family.

From the History of the Ohio Falls Counties, Vol 2, page 57:

Anthony Miller is the 7th of 10 children of Robert Miller who came to Jefferson county in about the year 1800.

Anthony Miller was born Feb 5, 1816. He served as a youth, an apprenticeship at the plasterer's trade, and has since worked at it considerably during the greater part of is life.

In connection with this, he farmed, and has lived on his farm in Valley Precinct for the last 35 yrs. On the 4th of July 1842 he was married to Ellen Camp, a native of Louisville. He is the father of 9 children, five of whom are living: Cassandra, Myra, Anthony, Weeden and Will.

John A. (A. is I'm sure, for Anthony) Miller - Feb 18, 1824, d. April 27, 1874, Rockport (Spencer County) Indiana.  From "The Lawyers and Lawmakers of Kentucky, H. Levin, The Lewis Publishing Co., Chicago, 1897.

John A. Miller, was born [in Lower Ponds, Jefferson County, Kentucky] in 1824, and grew to manhood on the old homestead. In Hickman county, Kentucky, he married Barbara Anne Nevill, and thus were united two of the old southern families, for Mrs. Miller was the daughter of Colonel Solomon C. Nevill, of Montgomery county, Tennessee. The Nevill's were descended from an old historic family of England, the first representatives of the name having located in North Carolina, whence members of the family afterward engaged in the handling of tobacco for export.

Children:  Neville Miller, Shackelford Miller, Mattie Miller, Eugenia Miller, Robert Miller (b. 1863), Cassandra Miller (b. 1866), Joan Belle Miller and Betty Taylor Miller

Tracking Our Robert Miller and Cassandra Moore in the Census ~

In the 1810 Jefferson Co., KY Census, I find our Robert Miller and living next to him is Hector Moore, son of James Francis Moore and his brother-in-law.  In this household is the following:

2-0-0-1-0--1-0-0-1-0-0-11

This translates to:

Two Males, under ten, one male 26-45, one female 26-45.  Robert Miller was born in 1774 in Virginia, and he would be 36 yrs old in this census and the male 26-45 would fit as our Robert Miller.  So Robert and Cassandra had two males born from 1800-1810.

2 males born 1800-1810
1 male born 1765-1784 (Robert)
1 female born 1765-1784 (Cassandra)

1850 census of Jefferson co. KY - Here we have Robert where I find out it is he in previous census, he is 76 yrs old, born in 1774.  His grandsons, Garret Pendergrast and Robert Pendergrast are in his household, along with his son, Philip (he is 30 yrs old, born 1820, and Ann Miller.

Third Generation

Dorothy Matthew Miller was born February 13, 1809, in Jefferson Co., KY.  She married James Francis Pendergrast, son of Jesse Elliott Pendergrast and Elizabeth 'Betsy' Moore.  Dorothy and James Francis Pendergrast were first (1/2) cousins.  Their shared grandfather was Col James Francis Moore.

Dorothy died between the 1835 and 1840 as near as I can determine.  Her husband, James Francis Pendergrast murdered a teacher per a family story passed down that I found at the Filson Historical Center last summer in their files.

I think after Dorthea died, and this murder/crime took place, James Francis Pendergrast went to Canada to live and to avoid the authorities.  That is where he died and two of his sons went to bring the body home (family story).  He is supposed to be buried at Fish Pool Plantation.  Two of the younger children, Garrett and Robert, are living with their grandfather, Robert Miller in the 1850 census, along with their uncle, Philip Taylor Miller and his wife Ann.

Dorothy Matthew Miller and James Francis Pendergrast had the following children:  (the text in quotes is taken from the family stories I found passed down and on file at the Filson Historical Library in Louisville, KY.)

i James Francis Pendergrass, born circa 1827 ? "during the last years of his life he was Wharf-master at New Orleans.  He died in that city in the '70s.  He married a daughter of Captain Smith."
ii John Pendergrass, born circa 1829? "enlisted in the southern army, was captured at Fort Donnelson and sustained a broken leg in the battle.  He was sent to the Gratiot Street prison in St. Louis (McDowel College.  His brother, Austin, who was in the U. S. Navy, got him out on parole, and it is supposed he died at Alton, IL, in a hospital."  My note:  Alton is just north of St. Louis.
iii Austin Pendergrast, born 1829, died? buried? I believe I read he was buried with his Uncle Commodore Pendergrast, in PA, but I've never seen a record of his being buried there.
Austin Pendergrass, Louisville, KY Captain Austin Pendergrass and friend Austin Pendergrass

iv Patrick Pendergrass (1832-1909) - this is my maternal great great grandfather - Patrick Pendergrass"Pat was for many years a well to do farmer in Vermilion Co., IL.  He died there sometime in the '80s."  (this is incorrect as he died in 1909 according to his tombstone in the Rossville Cemetery, where this author has been several times).
v

Garrett J. Pendergrass

Garrett Jesse Pendergrass, born 1838 (see
biography from the Vermillion County History). "He and his brother Patrick migrated to Vermilion Co., IL, Patrick was a successful farmer." Garrett moved around quite a bit.  I do not know where he was when he died, perhaps Vermilion Co., IL.  He moved to Kansas finally where he died and is buried.  He was married to a Hardesty girl.

vi Virginia Baron Pendergrass

Virginia Pendergrass, born 1835-1840, Virginia married Dr. Waller Cooper, and after his death she married John Briscoe, by whom she had one child, Frank. She died while her child was very young.
vii Robert Miller Pendergrass born circa 1840, one source indicates he married Clarissa A OLMSTEAD b: 1842 in MI? m: in KY
viii Matilda Pendergrass, died as infant, born before 1840
