John Knight Family - From Sarah Wade Knight's pension application, per Susan Carlisle Branam:

"Their house burned in Tennessee, the Red River area, just before moving to Kentucky so John's military discharge was lost in this fire.  Sarah claimed that her husband John Knight was a Captain in the North Carolina and participated in the Battle of Guilford Courthouse.  They married in Randolph County, NC, but she had no record because they had married via "Banns" (a Quaker means of marrying).  John Knight wanted to apply for a pension, so she said, he got on his horse and headed to NC and SC (from KY and he was up in years) to find men who served with him to provide affidavits of his service.  The family never heard or saw from him again.

Some notes from my cousin:

Under Mary Elizabeth Oglesby (d/0 Constant Oglesby Jr. and Nancy Ann Knight:

I believe we have two different Mary Elizabeth Oglesby's here.

Mary Elizabeth Oglesby daughter of Constant and Nancy married 19 Dec. 1850 in Christian County, Ky. to Ira Knight s/o John Knight and Rachel Hankins. Ira was born about 1819.

Children that I have listed are:

Lunicy born about 1856-was listed as Nicy age 4 on the 1860 census.

Kisia E. Knight b. about 1860 was only a few months old in the 1860 census

Thomas Knight born about 1867

I believe the Mary Elizabeth Oglesby that married William Bishop 5 March 1848 Hopkins County, Ky. was the daughter of Jacob Oglesby and Mary Ann "Polly" Knight. She was born 21 Jan. 1833 (family Bible),

In deeds Hopkins county courthouse- among the family members that signed this one was M. E. Bishop of Ohio County

Another has Mary E. and Wm. N. Bishop and on a third one "this deed between John K. Oglesby and Lucinda E. his wife and M. E. Bishop of the county of Ohio....."

A. B. Wilhite has the Wade H. Oglesby's combined. The Wade H. Oglesby in Illinois was the son of John C. Oglesby and Sarah (Sally) Knight. He married Nancy Ellen Crabtree-their children were all born in Illinois. Wade, Nancy and most of their children are buried at the Little Springs Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Hamilton County, Ill. You can view this Cemetery and find other information on the family on Carol Yarbrough's YESTERDAYS OF HAMILTON CO. I don't have the URL here right now, but you probably already have it. That is one of my favorite sites.

The Wade H. Oglesby that married Sarah Elizabeth Coursey was the son of Jacob Oglesby and Permelia Harkins Crabtree- he may be the same W. H. Oglesby that married Nancy L. (Dukes) Owen in Muhlenberg County 11 Sept. 1872. She was first married to Nathan D. Owen.

We find W. H. and N. L. in the 1880 Christian County census. He is age 64---his age varies-he was 49 when he married in 1872! This was a second marriage for both of them. Listed with them in the 1880 census:

M. J. age 21-this would be her daughter Martha Jane Owen

G. R. age 18 -her son George R. Owen

M. D. age 14-was miscopied and should be Nathaniel or (Nathan) D. Owen born 27 Oct. 1865; died 22 June 1937 and is buried at the Cherry Grove Cemetery in Muhlenberg Co., Ky. He married Nancy L. Dukes.

S.E. age 5 would be the daughter of W. H. and Nancy L. Sarah Emma Oglesby was born 1874; died 12 August 1955 Christian County, Ky. and is buried at the Judges' Chapel Cemetery, Christian Co., Ky. Emma married Miner Wagoner 24 Dec. 1893 at the home of Hamp Oglesby in Christian Co., Ky.

Wade Hampton's son John B. Oglesby's death certificate states his parents were Hamp Oglesby and Betsey Coursey.

Sarah Emma Wagoner's daughter in law told me that "Miss Emma" often told her that she was related to Mr. William Oglesby. (William Oglesby was Wanda Barnes Grandfather, and if this Wade Hampton is Jacob's and Permelia's son then Emma would be Mr. William Oglesby's second cousin.

#272 Virgil Oglesby and members of his family were killed in an explosion in Evansville Ind. 17 Feb. 1958. Seems they were visiting family that had moved there, when there was an explosion in the house. All were killed but one boy that was thrown out into the street--(p. s. this is another of A. B.' s stories).

Hello all:

I am researching the Oglesby's of Amherst Co., VA. I would like to know if any documents exist proving:

1. Jacob Oglesby married an Easter who I beginning to think is Easter Ann Bailey unless someone can prove otherwise.

2. Jacob Oglesby & Easter had more children than listed with the Douglas Register such as Pasty Oglesby or Martha Oglesby.

Any thoughts or comments on this branch of the family would be greatly
appreciated.
Thanks

HI there,
I cut the above from your web page so you could tell where I am coming from.  I am researching my husband's Dinsmore line which is Thomas Dinsmore married Martha Oglesby. You have their marriage record on you web page along with others from Amherst Co. I just sent an email to the Oglesby mailing list on rootsweb if you don't subscribe let me know and I will resend to you if you like.

I think it is strange Jacob has a daughter by Mildred Martin named Patsy but she is not linked up to the marriage of Thomas Dinsmore. I am wondering if it is possible that Patsy is really a daughter of Ann Bailey but isn't reflected in the Douglas Register. Or Easter is a third wife of Jacob? I have included the 1860 census of a son of Thomas1, Jacob2 Dinsmore.  Within their home he has his mother Martha "Patsy" (Oglesby) Dinsmore b. VA.  With Thomas1 naming his son Jacob2 I think is a good indication that Jacob is the father of Martha "Patsy" (Oglesby) Dinsmore. Also Elizabeth Oglesby  the dau. of Mildred is married to William Dinsmore I believe is the brother of my Thomas.

I have this one sticking point to complete my gedcom. I know it is the holiday season and you may not be able to get to this for a while but when you have time I sure would love to hear your thoughts.
Thanks so much

Bushy:

Qualification: Its been a few years since I collected the info below and I have not had a chance to go back and thoroughly document much more than the Douglas Register info that you also reference...

My info on Jacob Oglesby, Jr., son of Jacob & Constance (?) Oglesby, is that he married twice:

First, he married Ann Bailey, daughter of Thomas Bailey, on 14 Feb 1760 in Goochland County. With Ann he had at least four children: Thomas, Jesse, Constant and Pleasant Bailey Oglesby. Ann died in 1776 or 1780.

About 1782 he married Mildred (Martin) Clarke, daughter of Thomas and Ann (Moorman) Martin and widow of Micajah Clarke. Jacob and Mildred had at least six children: Elizabeth, Martha "Patsey", Mary Christian, Mildred, Susannah and James P. Oglesby.

I also show that Jacob died in 1813. This and Ann's death around 1780 would eliminate them as the parents of Elizabeth, Judith & Patsey Oglesby who married with Easter's consent. It would obviously eliminate Easter as being Easter Ann Bailey, as well.

The Richard Oglesby who purchased the land from William Mitchell is my 6g-grandfather and William, his son, my 5g-grandfather. Richard was the brother of Jacob Jr.

From what I've found, Jacob Oglesby Sr. and Constance (?) had 3, maybe four, sons:

1. William (b. abt 1727, d. 28 Dec 1802 in Fluvanna Co.), who married Ann Perkins. At least one source says he had a previous marriage to a Margaret or Mary Hayden, but I find this doubtful. This William did NOT marry Martha Ellis (see below)! William and Ann had a son named Richard who married a Susan (?). This Richard and William's brother Richard are frequently confused in the genealogy records. This Richard died in Virginia (possibly about 1811) and as late at 1836 Susan and her children were petitioning the government for benefits due them from Richard's Revolutionary War service. I suspect this is one of the Richards you found in the 1783-5 tax lists. William also had a son named Joseph - this is probably the Joseph you found on the tax list.

2. Richard (b. abt 1730, d. 5 Mar 1799 in Jefferson Co., Ky) (the other Richard in the tax lists I suspect), who married 1) Sarah Ferguson, 2) Elizabeth (Price) Curd and 3) Ann "Nancy" (Savage) Cash. The marriages and many of the children are found in the Douglas Register (Parson Douglass was also my 6g-grandfather though the Meriwether line - interesting connections!) Richard and Nancy moved to Kentucky and he died there in 1799. Richard and Sarah were the parents of William (my 5g-grandfather as I said above) who is the William who married Martha Ellis 29 Dec 1771 (their daughter Lucy was born on the 4 Feb 1774 date you show for the marriage). Richard and Nancy had a son, Jacob, who was the father of the famous Gov. Richard James Oglesby of Illinois.

3) Jacob Jr. (b. abt 1734, d. Jan 1813 in Albemarle Co., Va.), who married Ann Bailey and Mildred (Martin) Clarke

4) David (b. abt 1744, d. 26 Jul 1821 in Campbell Co., Va), who married Sarah (Sanderson?), though this is unconfirmed that David was a son of Jacob Sr. (I've only seen this in one source...)

Alas, I have no reasonable candidate for the spouse of Easter Oglesby and father of the daughters you named.

I have not heard from "Bushy" yet. I think I have Patsy married to Dinsmore. I have not checked my records yet. and I believe she was the daughter of Jacob's 3rd wife. Easter could not have been his 3rd wife--His first wife we have unknown-and I thought she could have been Easter, but if Easter signed for these girls to get married she would have been the 4th wife-or not line of our Jacob. More when I get time to review my notes.
Must get on and get this computer cleaned up and finish the laundry. Have a good day. Jean

HI Catherine,

Thank you so much for passing my email along to Jean and Barb I hope we can help each other. I just pulled some items on the Perkins line in hopes of uncovering something to substantiate the Joseph Oglesby married a Perkins. I try to find something to prove each generation either a deed, will, or bible just something. I had a bad experience with one of my lines that all the web pages on the net showed the family exactly the same way.

After months of going back and forth found one researcher had created the gedcom all had copied. Since I live in the state that this ancestor came from I collected all the documents presented them on the web and could find absolutely nothing to substantiate the first researchers information. She finally posted publicly that it was a guess on her part. I have posted digital images of the documents so it is just up to anyone else to determine if they are happy with what they are posting.

Anyhow, back to this line. I am having a bit of a problem figuring out where my line comes in. I looked at the tax list for Amherst and there sure aren’t that many candidates to choose from. I’ll continue on posting to the genforum and notify the mailing list I am doing so I don’t want to irritate anyone and fill up mailboxes of people out of town for the holidays. I hope to hear from you Jean and Barb if you find time during this very busy time of year.

On my Dinsmore line I am just starting on the latter part. I have death records two generations back and their still in CA at that time. I am going to start sending (if they exist) for the records of the earlier years in the next two months and get this branch of my husband’s line documented. The Dinsmore connect to his Hartman line from York Co., PA but they didn’t meet up till California. The Hartman’s were members of the Church of the Brethern and I think the Dinsmore’s were also but not positive on that yet. Here is our web page if you would like to view it but it does not contain anything on the Oglesby’s I am still working on that gedcom.

I have been researching the Perkins family in association with the Oglesby's of VA. In many researchers gedcoms or web pages it is shown that Jacob2 Oglesby s/o Richard & Susanna (Ware) Oglesby married a Constantine Perkins.  I have not been able to locate who could possibly have been a wife of this Jacob2 Oglesby and only have found the name Constantine to be a male name not female. If someone can point me to a document to prove out the Perkins theory please do. Below is what I have found so far in published books the following mainly coming from the Curd family book.
Thanks

Hello Bushy,
I am descended from Jacob Oglesby Jr and first wife unknown through their son Constant
I know I have seen the Dinsmore name but just cannot seem to find it in my Oglesby material except in some marriages: Marriage Bonds...Amherst County, Va.l 1763-1800 by Sweeney.
I had thought that Easter might be the first wife of our Jacob jr, but cannot be the Easter that signed the marriage bonds for Elizabeth, Patsy and Judith Oglesby, as Jacob and first wife would have been married between 1748 and 1760.

I have Martha "Patsy" Oglesby born 1783;died 1825 Raccoon Ford, Va. the daughter of Jacob Oglesby Jr and his third wife, Mildred Martin Clark (they were married in 1780)

Martha married (1) Edward Cox....they had the following children: William, Elizabeth Mildred; Sarah Jane, James Pleasant; John Waddle; Edward Traver and Thomas Martin Cox(Mildred Martin Clark was d/o Thomas Martin and Ann Moorman)

Hi,

Now, about Jacob & Easter and their children:

Ok, you have the record of Sukey Oglesby to Thomas Breaden (Braden) Here's a correction. There are two books in print containing Amherst Co VA marriages. One has Sukey Oglesby marrying Thomas, the other has Sarah Oglesby marrying Wm. Breaden. I have a copy of the original which quite clearly says Sukey and Thomas --not Sarah and William. Sukey (a nickname for Susannah in that time period. ) married Thomas Braden 18 June 1788 Amherst Co., VA. The record mentions John Oglesby and Jesse Oglesby as witnesses and Jacob giving consent.

I am a descendant of this Thomas Braden through his subsequent marriage. I also happen to be an Oglesby descendent, through Constant Oglesby., Sr. of Christian Co KY.. These families stuck together from VA to KY to Hamilton Co IL.

Ok, then there were the other three girls Patsy, Eliz., Judith who married with the consent of Easter, 1790-1798. Thomas Braden was mentioned as surety/witness in the marriage record of Eliz. O. to W m Dinsmore, which helps us link Sukey & Easter.  In about 1800, Thomas and Sukey Braden moved to TN, but soon moved on to  Christian Co KY.  Constant Oglesby had already moved there from VA via SC. Easter's 2 other daughters (Eliz-Wm Dinsmore and Judith- Isaac Durham) also moved to Christian, KY. Wm Dinsmore apparently died and Elizabeth remarried a Harkins. I don't think the other Oglesby-Dinsmore couple (Patsey-Thomas ) moved Christian Co., KY; they eventually settled in IN.  Judith and Isaac Durham eventually moved to and died in Hamilton Co IL.

Sukey Oglesby Braden had died in Christian Co KY ca 1814-15; and Thomas Braden remarried, eventually moved to in Hamilton Co IL where he died in 1835. Some Dinsmores also came to IL but I haven't sorted them out.  Some descendants of Constant Oglesby, Sr. also came to Hamilton Co., including my direct line.  One more connection, There was a girl named Easter Dinsmore who married in Christian Co KY, her mother named Elizabeth. Walker Oglesby witnessed for her. Walker O. married a Durham ( a cousin?) and moved to Saline Co, IL, right next to Hamilton Co. IL. Some of us think that Walker is son of a John and Jane Oglesby of Christian Co.

My thinking is that Jacob and Easter probably had at least the following children:

John, father of Walker; Sukey; Patsy; Elizabeth; Judith.  Looking at them from my perspective, it seems logical to place Constant O,  Sr. in this group as well.  I'm basing that solely on the migration to Christian Co. of course, which is pretty thin evidence.  Then there's the mention of Jesse in Sukey's marriage record, which causes  most of us to at least wonder if Jacob m. Ann = Jacob m. Easter, since we know Jacob & Ann had a son Jesse.

The tricky part is figuring out how many Jacobs there were and which Jacob is which.  The information that gets passed around is conflicting to say the least.  Someone else did suggest to me that Ann and Easter are the same person.  Others seem convinced that Ann had died before Jacob and Jacob remarried to Mildred Clarke.  Of course most researchers have Constant as son of Jacob & Ann Bailey or of that same Jacob with a previous wife. Some even have Sukey as dau. of that Jacob and a wife before Ann, which makes no sense because Sukey wasn't any where near that old. Others have Easter listed as the first wife of Jacob before he married Ann which also makes no sense because Easter was living as a widow during the 1790s. There is a Bible record somewhere --I think I saw it on Ancestry.com--I think-- which lists 3 sons of Jacob & Ann, Constant is not one of them. (The 3 were Thomas, Jesse, and Pleasant.)

Is there any actual evidence that Ann had died before Jacob??? then Ann and Easter the widow cannot be the same person. The Jacob who left a widow named Mildred. after 1800 could not be the same Jacob who left a widow named Easter around 1790. Which Jacob is which, I cannot say based on what evidence I've seen. The men who married Ann, Easter, and Mildred could be three totally different Jacobs as far as I know. They certainly can't all three be the same; we're dealing with at least two Jacobs here.

Pleasant Bailey Oglesby Record Book

The record of Pleasant Bailey Oglesby is taken out of a hand-made book, made by him. It is written in long hand, bound in calf skin. All of his examples and lessons are in it. He used this one book, in teaching school, when he sat down to teach for nine months, on February 21, 1785, on Morris Creek, Virginia.  [I could only locate a Morrisville in Culpeper Co., VA.]

Records found herein:

Pleasant Bailey Oglesby was born March 15, 1766, in Albemarle County, Virginia. He was the son of Jacob Oglesby and Ann, his wife. They were married February 4, 1760.

Their son, Pleasant Oglesby married Betsy Gillum, December 24, 1787.

Their children:

John Oglesby, born 1790 married Betsy Thomas.
Tarlton Woodson Oglesby, born January 13, 1793 married Antonet Rucker.
Charles married Polly Gilbert
Pleasant married Milly Woolery
Frances died at the age of 23
Maria married Billy Gillum
Elizabeth, born March 20, 1807, died at 16 years of age
Martha Ann, born August 9, 1811, married Jessie Field, November 14, 1834
[She was the grandmother of Dr. Harry Field Parker.]

A clipping pasted in the Oglesby Record book:

Jacob Oglesby and Ann Bailey were married in Goochland County, Virginia, February 14, 1760 by Rev. Douglas.

Thomas a son, born January 5, 1761
Jesse a son, born November 15, 1763
Pleasant Bailey born March 15, 1766

In marriage records in Madison County, Kentucky There lived a Jessie Oglesby, who married Celia Witt in 1796. Jessie died there in 1852. He was a Revolutionary Soldier and so was Thomas, first born
son of Jacob Oglesby and Ann Bailey, his wife. The record also shows that Tarlton Oglesby and Antonet Rucker, his wife were Bondsmen to John Thomas.  [Source: Bible Records of Missouri, Vol. VIII on Ancestry.com.]

My great-great-great-great-grandmother was Martha Oglesby of Albemarle County, Virginia, daughter of Jacob Oglesby and the former Mildred Martin, widow of Micajah Clark. Other than the names of Martha’s parents being given in Henry Miller Cox’s The Cox Family in America, solid evidence of Martha’s pedigree is scant. However, given that “Oglesby” and “Martin” and “Mildred” turn up as middle names for three of Martha’s seven children by my 4g-grandfather, Edward Cox, I’m pretty comfortable with the notion that Martha’s parents are Jacob and Mildred.

Actually, my question was not so much about the Oglesbys in general but on how to chase down some information on Martha. The Eliza McNaught book on the Clark family apparently mentions that Martha married a second time after Edward Cox to someone whose name is unknown. I want to see if there are any citations to support the assertion that Martha Oglesby had a second husband of unknown name after Edward Cox. This could not have happened. Martha died after sometime after November 1, 1824, and left Edward with six young children. The McNaught book must be the reason I’ve seen more than one posted family tree repeating this second-husband thing.

Last summer I came across the estate inventory for Jacob Oglesby, Jr. I had been looking at microfilm hoping that I could find an actual will by him. The Albemarle County records seem so sketchy. I wonder if he died intestate. Since he died so close to the time that Martha and Edward Cox married (probably not even more than a few weeks from the date), it’s my feeling that his death was quite sudden since I can’t imagine that Martha would have married if her father was overtly ill or right after he died. But that’s just what my gut tells me.

Anyway, as it turns out I don’t have to bug you for any particular information, so consider this a “howdy” from a distant Oglesby cousin.

Evelyn
