Generation Two

WILLIAM BARTLETT, SR., born 1695/96 Essex Co. VA, died 1775 Berkeley Parish, Spotsylvania Co. VA,  At this time the name of his wife is not known or been proven.

I think I have finally chased down why so many people claim that Susannah, wife of William Bartlett, was a daughter of John Davis, and (take your choice: either 1) Susannah (Mathena/Mathey) Day, or 2) Susannah Wyatt). It’s complicated, and it’s all nonsense. In fact this should be a case study of how NOT to do genealogy; I don’t think I’ve ever encountered so much confusion, 2+2=7 logic, and in some cases outright fraud. I think I can prove everything I’m going to say below, but to save you from the tedium of citing all the records, etc., I’m merely going to attempt to summarize the big picture. (If you want to challenge me on any specific points or issues, I’ll be glad to respond in a separate email).

The trouble began, as far as I have been able to determine, with the 1891 publication of a book by Charles Henry Browning called “Americans of royal descent…” (which is now being offered in a reprint, soft covered, version for $47.) It says (p. 473 of reprint version):

“Richard Wyatt, of New Kent Co., probably d. v. p., having a son and heir, Henry, of New Kent and Spotsylvania Cos., a legatee of his grandfather, Henry Wyatt, deceased, in 1705 (who had Richard, of King and Queen Co., 1706, and Henry, of Prince George Co., 1728, and

“Susanna Wyatt, who m. first, ____ Day, and m., secondly, Thomas Davis, and had:

“Susanna Davis, who m. William Bartlett, of Spotsylvania Co., and had: Major Henry William, of Berkley Co., Va., and three daughters, Mrs. Montague, Mrs. Graves, and Mrs. Collins and…”

The Daniel Matheny of Stafford Co., VA, died ca. 1685. In a Stafford County record dated 10 June 1691, it is revealed that Susannah Matheny, his daughter, married first Solomon Day, and secondly John Davis. There are other records that corroborate this information.

In a series of articles by Dr. J. L. Miller and published in The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Vol. XII (1904 & 1905), he outlines what little is known about John Davis who married Susannah (Matheny) Day. The bottom line is that John & Susannah are known to have had one son (Thomas, b. 8 Aug 1692 – from family Bible), and conjectured to have had another son (William). It is not known where and when John Davis or his wife, Susannah, died. And there is not now, nor ever has been, any evidence that they had a daughter named Susannah.

At this point a significant portion of the excerpt from “Americans of Royal Descent” is proved to be wrong!

Another article published in Tyler’s Quarterly, Vol. 21, No. 3, 1940, says among other things:

“Mr. Richard Wyatt lived where his father, Maj. William Wyatt did. Patented in New Kent in 1683. Married Katherine, widow of Edmund Tunstall, who died in 1691. She was daughter of John Longe, who married Katherine, daughter of Maj. Geo. Morris and widow of Thomas Pettus, of St. Stephen’s….”

From Tyler’s Quarterly, Vol. 26, No. 2, 1944, it says:

“Edmund Tunstall died in King and Queen county about 1696, and his widow Catherine married secondly Captain Richard Wyatt, Gentleman. By her first husband …. By her second husband she had issue: Thomas Wyatt; Henry Wyatt; Susannah Wyatt, who married first Solomon Day and second Thomas Davis; and Richard Wyatt who moved to Charlotte county, VA…”

So once again we have someone stating that Susanna Wyatt married Solomon Day and second Thomas Davis – obviously having gotten that information from “Americans of Royal Descent” – because it is wrong.

William and Mary Quarterly (1st Series), Vol. 10, [also Genealogies of Virginia Families (W&M Q), Vol. 5, repeats:

“…(3) Richard. In 1683 Richard and John Wyatt patented 650 acres in New Kent county, ‘formerly granted to Major William Wyatt.’ Richard Wyatt married Catherine, widow of Edmund Tunstall, of King and Queen county, and they had Thomas Wyatt of King and Queen, living in 1739… “

Finally, in 1986, Dorothy Ford Wulfeck, in her Marriages of Some Virginia Residents, 1607-1800, says:

“Bartlett, William m. bef. 25 Mar 1720, Susannah Davis, dau. of John of Stafford Co. Proven by Essex Co. records.”

Well, NO! William Bartlett is not to be found between 1717 and 1722 (when he was probably in K&Q Co. in that part that was cut off to form Spotsylvania Co.), when he reappeared in Spotsylvania County when it was formed in 1722. His wife, as proved by Spotsylvania Co. records, was Susannah. There are no Essex County records naming Susannah! There are no records in either Essex or Spotsylvania to name Susannah as a Davis, much less as the daughter of John Davis of Stafford County.

Then she says about Richard Wyatt:

“Wyatt, Richard, son of Maj. William, m. Catherine (Long) Tunstall, widow of Edmund Tunstall and dau. of John (d. bef. 16871) and Katherine (Morris) Pettis Long.”

Citing the Tyler’s Quarterly articles provided above.

Then she says:

“Wyatt, Susannah m. (1) Solomon Day; m. (2) Thomas Davis.”

Thus you can see why there is so much confusion. The misinformation started before “Americans of Royal Descent” (1891) because I don’t believe the author plucked that out of thin air; someone obviously fed him that information. (An example of confusion and misinformation before the Internet). But he promulgated it far and wide. Other articles published in some of the standard genealogy sources, obviously picked it up and re-promulgated it. Nowhere is the primary source cited!

Whatever…:

· Susannah Matheny/Mathena, daughter of Daniel Matheny and Sarah Wentworth, married (1) Solomon Day, and (2) John Davis. She did not marry Thomas Davis, and she was not the daughter of Richard Wyatt.

· There is absolutely no proof or evidence that John Davis and Susannah (Matheny) Day had a daughter named Susannah. And you can ignore exact dates of birth given for daughter Susannah you will find on the Internet, if she cannot be proved to have even existed.

If Richard Wyatt did have a daughter named Susannah, she did not marry Solomon Day. How, I ask, does anyone know or even think that he had a daughter named Susannah? He was a resident, mostly, of King and Queen County whose records have been completely destroyed. So if he had a will, it was lost when the other records were lost. (Apparently, by one Essex County record, he was still living 1712.) But Richard Wyatt does appear in some Essex County records, and is known to have lived in nearby K&Q County. There is some confusion as to when he married Catherine (Long) Tunstall, but most sources seem to agree that Edmund Tunstall died in 1696 and that his widow married Richard Wyatt ca. 1698. Susannah was then born ca. 1700, and she could be the Susannah who married William Bartlett.

· William Bartlett must have married Susannah sometime between 1720-1730. Forget the exact date of their marriage that you will often find on the Internet; it is a fraud. But we can prove that they were married before 4 May 1731. William Bartlett first appears in Spotsylvania County (created 1722) in that part that was formerly part of King and Queen County. In fact early record identifies him as being of St. Stephen’s Parish; Richard Wyatt was also of St. Stephen’s Parish! Did William Bartlett move to K&Q Co. to be near his new wife’s parents (who were quite wealthy)? Food for thought…
