Notes for JACOB OGLESBY:  The marriage ceremony for Jacob Oglesby and Ann Bailey was performed by the Rev. Douglas in Goochland Co., VA.

1785 Albemarle Co., VA Census:  Jacob Oglesby, 12 white souls, 1 dwelling, 5 other buildings.

1810 Albemarle Co., VA Census: Jacob Oglesby; 1 male 16-26, 1 male over 45, 2 females 16-26, 1 female over 45, 10 slaves.

Notes for MILDRED MARTIN: When Mildred married Jacob, she brought 6 children into the family.  With his 4 sons, they now have a total of 10 children.  Whether her children adopted the Oglesby name is not yet known.  Her children by her first husband were:  Thomas, abt 1762; Mourning, abt 1763; Robert, abt 1764; Susan, abt 1766; William, abt 1768; and Nancy, abt 1770.

I stumbled onto your website while looking for John Miller/Nancy Logan White who m. in abt 1820 in Christian Co., Ky. I too am descended from Richard 1685, and Susanna. My line is:

Richard
Jacob O. 1709/Constance
William O. 1734
Joseph Blakey1786
George H. O. 1832 (George came to Daviess Co. KY., mar. Martha Short, had 10 children, 6 girls and 4 boys. As far as I know the boys had no children
Florence O., my grandmother.
My dad
Ione Miller Jones, Owensboro, KY.

-------
Jacob Jr., not my direct line, but his brother.

Here is what I have recently received on Mildred Clark. This came in email from a descendant of Mildred, whom I have never met. You may already have this info.

Quote from email:

"Ann (Moorman) Martin and Thomas Moorman's brother, Achilles Moorman, married Elizabeth Adams, sister of Judith Adams. Judith Adams married Micajah Clark, Sr. and they were parents of Micajah Clark, Jr. (who died in 1774) who married Mildred Martin, daughter of Capt. Thomas Martin and Ann Moorman. According to my Clark book (by Eliza McNaught), Mildred (Martin) Clark probably married Jacob Oglesby about 1780. Jacob died in 1813 according to McNaught, and also according to the GEDCOM of James H. Ware which I have found on the Internet giving five generations of Oglesby's. However, there are differences among researchers as to how many children Jacob Oglesby and Mildred had. The McNaught book gives them four: Elizabeth Whitney Oglesby (m. John Fagg), Martha "Patsy" Oglesby (m. 1st Edward Cox, 2nd husband's name is unknown), Mary C. "Polly" Oglesby (m. Coleman Estes), and Pleasant Oglesby d. unmarried. The Ware data only gives one daughter, Elizabeth."

From another researcher:  Hello, just found your website. I descend from Thomas Dinsmore & Martha Pastey Oglesby (have copy of marriage doc) that lists her mother as Easter/Esther Oglesby widow. They were my 4th great grandparents. From looking at your site it appears as someone named Evelyn is listing her as a child of Jacob & Mildred (Martin. According to my doc this isn't so. I also have the headstone photos if you are interested. Thanks Brenda.

I am collecting more notes from other researchers here.

Children of JACOB OGLESBY, Jr. and Constance unknown are:

i CONSTANT OGLESBY, b. ?, Goochland Co., VA; d. Bef. 1867, Christian Co., KY.
ii DAVID OGLESBY, b. Bet. 1751 - 1758; d. Bef. 1875.
iii ROBERT OGLESBY, b. Bet. 1751 - 1758; d. Bef. 1875.
iv SARAH "SUKEY" OGLESBY, b. Bet. 1751 - 1758; d. Bef. 1875; m. WILLIAM BREADEN, June 18, 1788, Amherst Co., VA; b. Bet. 1763 - 1773; d. Bef. 1873.
v JOHN OGLESBY, b. Bet. 1751 - 1758; d. Bef. 1840.
vi ELISHA OGLESBY, b. December 29, 1758; d. March 02, 1833; m. (1) MARY BRYSON; b. Abt. 1760; d. Bef. 1800; m. (2) XX ROGERS; d. Bef. 1800; m. (3) SARAH PRATT, June 10, 1800, Amherst Co., VA.

From Jean:  my first source is Dr. Ishmael Oakley. He lived in Christian County and did extensive research on the Oglesby family back in the 1960's. A second cousin Roscoe Oglesby sent me some of Dr. Oakley's information in the 60's to get me started on the Oglesby family. Mary Lovell, another second or third cousin of Central City was into the genealogy society here in Muhlenberg County. She brought me three letters she had received from Dr. Oakley not long before she passed away.  I say first source, because I have info on my chart that Dr. Oakley does not have in the letter to Mary, or that Roscoe gave me. So evidently I have picked up some info along the way and did not put down source.

Catherine, while I have these letters out I have another item to pass on.  I had suspected that Jane listed in the Christian County census was a sister in law of our Constant, from Dr. Oakley's letter -

"John Oglesby born 1775-1780 was a brother of Constant Oglesby SR. He went from Albermarle County, Va. to S. C. then to Christian County, Ky. His wife was Jane and on 1850 census she is living with John J. Johnson.  children I know of:

1. Ann Oblesby married John Knight
2. Walker Oglesby born 1798 married 1st-Sally Durham; 2nd Elizabeth Harkins
3. Daniel Oglesby married Matilda Meredith, Hopkins Co., Ky. and was later in Union county, Ky."

I believe Ann may have been second wife of my great great grandfather John Knight who first married Rachel Hankins. Jean

Elisha Oglesby m. Hannah Hobbs in 1757 in Craven County, SC.

Their son was Elisha Oglesby Jr. m. Mary Polly Bryan, who was raised by her cousin Rebecca Bryan-Boone, wife of Daniel Boone.

Who were Elisha Sr's parents?

To the one who posted the top information about Jacob Oglesby's children and had Elisha b. 1758 as #6 which is wrong. The Elisha b. 1758 father was also Elisha & was killed by Indians near the time of Elisha jr. birth.  Hannah Hobbs, Oglesby married James King Carr raised 5 boys & 2 girls in 1782 he died of smallpox mother & children move to KY then to middle TN in 1785----I believe Elisha stayed in TN. Elisha married to Sarah Pratt 10 junk 1800, Amherst Co., VA must have been someone else.

Fourth Generation

Constant OGLESBY born circa 1765 in of Goochland Co., Virginia. Constant died in Christian Co., Kentucky before 1840, he was 75. Constant married Nancy Ann COURSEY.  She was born about 1767 (of Goochland Co., Virginia). Nancy died in Logan County, Kentucky?  (not proven) (does anyone have confirming information?, please contact me) Nancy was the daughter of William Coursey and his first wife.  On left is a picture of the  original homestead of this Constant and Nancy in Kentucky, near Apex and the Natural Rock Bridge.  Nancy Coursey was "supposedly" the first white woman to walk across it.

Per Jean:  in a questionnaire filled out by Sarah Elvira Knight Putman in 1922 for one of her grandchildren, she does not name Nancy (married Constant Oglesby Jr) as her father's sister.
She names Elizabeth (married Fox), Polly (married Jacob Oglesby), Susie (married Timmons) and Sallie (married John C. Oglesby) she named his brothers as Wade Knight and James Knight (James married Elizabeth Oglesby daughter of William L.)  Sarah was the daughter of John Knight and Rachel Hankins John was the son of John Knight sr, and Sarah Wade

Notes for CONSTANT OGLESBY:  Brenda Webster's FGS notes that:  According to family legend, it was too hot and dry in SC and they moved to Christian Co., KY in 1803.  As you go from Greenville, KY on Hwy 189, after crossing Pond River into Christian Co., on top of a hill is a house on the left - just a little off the road.  Constant lived behind that house near a spring; at last account, it is still owned by direct descendants through Jacob, son of Constant.  On the right is a clump of trees never worked on.  This is where Constant & Nancy are supposedly buried.  A wee bit south of that, at Apex, an old road crosses going out to Natural Bridge.  That road was supposedly the Red Banks Trace (Henderson, KY).  Nancy, daughter of Constant, was the first white woman to cross the natural rock bridge.  Constant Oglesby's family is buried on a hill above Pond River, Hwy 62.  His wife Nancy is buried near a clump of trees with sandstone markers and a wire fence.  (Also noted is that it is Hwy 189 and that nothing is left but sandstone rocks.)

A deed where Peter MORGAN and wife Annemeriah (Anna Mariah) sold land to Jesse SCRUGGS lists Constant OGLESBY as a witness. 1791 deed of land in Edgefield Co., SC (formerly Granville Co., SC (branch of Turkey Creek called Beaverdam) which was granted to John Clark and conveyed to William MINTER in 1774 and by Wm. Minter's will descended to Anna Mariah Minter Morgan.

The Old Oglesby Cemetery in Kentucky

The Oglesby Cemetery located out on highway 189 near the Muhlenberg and Christian County, KY line.  Hunters have built a deer stand in the middle of of it !  Inside the grove of trees are several sandstone markers like the one below.  Constant Oglesby, Sr. is probably buried here and perhaps Permelia Crabtree and husband Jacob Oglesby.

1803 - about when he moved to Christian Co. (per Jo Brown).
8 Jul 1807, Constant was appointed a constable in Christian Co.
8 Jul 1809, he was granted 400 acres on Pond River (near Apex) on the Greenville Hopkinsville Road.

Nancy was listed as Anny on a deed of 1789.

Many of the Oglesby's are buried in the Oglesby Cemetery at White Plains, Hopkins Co., KY, but there are also other Oglesby cemeteries - at least one other in Christian Co. and one in Logan Co.

Constant Oglesby and Nancy Ann Coursey had the following children:

i. Christian Haskins Oglesby- SC born 1788, died Jan 25, 1859 at 71 yrs, daughter of Constant Oglesby.  Widow, born N.C.  Died of Chest Cold of old age.  Source, Christian County, KY Vital Statistics.  From Jean:  Constant and Nancy (Coursey) Oglesby's daughter Christian Hoskins Oglesby married James Harkins about 1809 Christian County, Ky. James Harkins and John Ratliff married sisters.  The Jno. Oglesby mentioned below is probably brother to Nancy and Christian.

I also found the Harkins mentioned with Constant Oglesby in Edgefield, S. C. From County Court Order Book "C" part 1, Christian County, Kentucky 1814-1817, Transcribed ad Indexed by James Taylor Killebrew, 1987, Published by Christian County Genealogical Society, Inc.

"Ordered that James Harkins, Jno. Ratliff, Jno. Oglesby be and are hereby appointed Commissioners to establish the beginning corner and special calls of a 200 acres survey granted by the County of Commissioners No. 3388 and patented to Calvin merry and that they report."

ii. Jacob Oglesby - Jacob first married Rhody DUPUY.  He married Permelia CRABTREE second.  This is Barb and Wanda's line. (Permelia and husband could be buried at the old Oglesby family cemetery that I've been to twice.
iii. James Oglesby -  James married Nancy KERKMAN.
iv. William L. Oglesby - William L. married Mary UNKNOWN.  This is Jean's, Brenda Webster's, Joetta Brown and Pam Oglesby's ancestor.  Picture on left is son of William L. Oglesby and is in the Oglesby Cemetery in White Plains, Kentucky.  Info on him:  Jacob Oglesby born 19 July 1803 in South Carolina and died 20 May 1878, Hopkins County, KY; married Mary Ann (or Polly Ann) Knight 17 June 1824 in Christian County, KY.  Mary Ann was born 14 April, 1804 and died 12 Aug 1877.  This couple donated the land for the cemetery in White Plains and for the school.
v. Constant Oglesby, Jr. - Born on 22 Jan 1788 in South Carolina. Constant Jr. died on 19 Sep 1838, he was 50.  On 30 Oct 1810 when Constant Jr. was 22, he married Nancy KNIGHT, daughter of John KNIGHT & Sarah Wade, in Christian Co., Kentucky.

Picture in this paragraph is Sarah Knight's tombstone in the Rockbridge Cemetery.

vi. Nancy Ann 'Anny' Oglesby - (~1786-1860) my line
vii. John C. Oglesby - born about 1794, married Sally Knight, daughter of John Knight* and Sarah Wade, sister of Nancy Knight who married Constant Jr. above.  Susan Carlisle Branam is researching this line.  John C. died in Hamilton County, IL.

Notes for John Knight:  From the History of Christian County, Kentucky by Lee Perrin:  (page 169) John Knight was an old soldier; fought through the entire war and drew a pension from the Government.  He left a large family in the northern part of the county, and was much respected for his many kindly qualities of mind and heart, and his character as a good citizen.

and this:  (page 304) Among the old Revolutionary soldiers who came at a very early day, are found the names of John Knight, of South Carolina, 1790; Dilmus Johnson, also of South Carolina, and present, slightly wounded, at the surrender of Cornwallis; and William Gray, of Spartanburg, South Carolina who was in a number of engagements and all through the war, and who settled on the West Fork of Pond River, three miles east of Crofton, where he afterward lived and died.

County Court Order Book "B" Part 1 for Christian County, Kentucky for the years 14 October 1805 - 12 September 1809 for a County Court held at Town of Hopkinsville, Manuscript preparation of Court Order Book "B" Part 1 by Lon Arneld Bostick, Sr., Indexed by Elizabeth Harrington, Published by Christian County Family and History Research Society

At a County Court begun and held for Christian County at the Courthouse in the Town of Hopkinsville n Monday the 14th day of October 1805:  Present:  John Wilson, Sam'l Bradley, John Knight, Isaac Clark and Young Ewing, Gentlemen.

There's more info on Sarah Elizabeth Coursey and Wade Hampton Oglesby.  Wanda Barnes figured out the mystery.  Sarah died around 1868 and Wade remarried to Nancy L. Wells (1872).  Nancy was the widow of Nathaniel D. Owens and they had four kids.  She and Wade are in the 1880 Christian Co. census.  Wade and Nancy had one child together - Sarah E.

Demarcus married Emily C. Foster, daughter of James A. Foster and Margaret F. Hoskins.  I tracked all that because James A. Foster next married Sarah Insco - one of my line.  Thus begins another circle.  Barb.

Fifth Generation

Nancy (Ann/Anny) OGLESBY, daughter of Nancy Coursey and Constant Oglesby was born about 1795 in South Carolina?  Nancy (Ann) died in Christian or Logan Co., Kentucky circa 1860.  She married John "Johnny Ratliff".

Although a couple of researches thought that Johnny and his wife Nancy are buried in the Rockbridge Cemetery in Kentucky, a tombstone, nor listing in the cemetery records confirm this.  Picture below is myself at the entrance of the Rockbridge Cemetery in Kentucky.

In 1809 when Nancy (Ann) was approximately 19 yrs old, she married John "Johnny" RATCLIFFE, who was born circa 1788 (somewhere in North Carolina according to a Logan County, KY Census record). John "Johnny" died sometime between the 1850 and 1860 census in either Christian or Logan Co., Kentucky.  Nancy is last found in the 1860 Logan County, KY census living near her son, Constant Oglesby, she is listed as 75 yrs old, making her born in 1795.  Nancy is not in the 1870 census, so she must have died between 1860-70.

Nancy Ann Coursey and John Ratliff had the following children:

i Son Ratliff - John and Nancy must have had a son die young because in the 1820 census they have a son under ten years listed, but he is not in the 1830 census.  They married in 1809 and a child born shortly thereafter makes sense to be listed in the 1820 census as under ten years.
ii. Ailey Ratliff -  Born on 10 Dec 1813 in Kentucky. Ann M. (Ailey) died on 2 Mar 1877, she was 63.  She married Felix BOURLAND, son of Archibald BOURLAND, born in 1807 in Wilkes County, NC and Catherine Unknown. The 1820 census listed her as deaf and dumb.  This family is listed in the 1850 Christian County census:  Bourland, Felix 43 M Merchant, born Kentucky; wife Ann M., 37 born Kentucky; children:

i Albany G. BOURLAND, born 1837 13 F (no further information) (Albany is Felix Bourland's sister's name and who I'm sure this Albany was named for)
ii Almira E. BOURLAND, born 1839,  11 F - married 2 Oct 1862 J. E. Croft, son of Mary E. McKinney and William Croft, they had Selena, born 1865 (nfi) and Elizabeth, (n)fi.
iii Joseph P. BOURLAND, 5 Jan 1846; died 19 Nov 1889, Christian Co  4 M - married Cordelia Lnu, born abt 1850, KY and had Iva, born 1871, died in Crofton, KY and David, Born 1874, KY (nfi) - Iva married unknown Long and had Roena May, born 15 Sept 1894; died 29 Feb 1920, Crofton KY, buried Bowles cem, married C. R. Teasley (nfi)
iv Almarinda BOURLAND (or Amanda), born 1848  C. 2 F - married Benjamin H. West, born 2 March 1848, Crofton, KY, son of Eliza Johnson and Phillip West they adopted Nannie S. (nfi)
iv Almanda Cordelia Bourland, born after 1850

Source:  According to "The Bourland's in America" by Carl & Mary Read, P.O. Box 2072 Warne Robins, GA 31093 - Felix Bourland married Ann M. Ratcliff, born 10 December 1813, KY, died 2 March 1877 and both are  buried in the Bowles Cemetery in Crofton Kentucky.  I have the Cemetery index for the Bowles Cemetery and neither Felix or Ann are listed as being buried here but Roena Mae Bourland, wife of C. R. Teasley is listed September 15, 1846 - February 29, 1920

iii. Constant Oglesby Ratliff - (1820-1879)  (our line.  Constant was born 19 June 1820 and died 27 Dec 1879 when he was 59 yrs old in Christian County, KY.  He is buried in the Gibson Cemetery in Christian County, KY.  See a picture of the Gibson Cemetery here.  He married Mary Bertha "Polly" Gibson.  See the Gibson line here.  Constant was a sheriff, teacher, surveyor and was in the Civil War.  Picture in this paragraph is myself next to this Constant's tombstone.
iiv. Polly R. Ratliff - Born circa 1813/14.  She married Constant Mezo circa 1833
v. Possibly a Mary B. Ratliff, b. 1820 who marries M. D. Helm in Christian County

Sixth Generation

Constant Oglesby RATLIFF/RATCLIFFE.  Born on 19 Jun 1820 in Christian Co., Kentucky. Constant Oglesby Ratliff died in Christian Co., Kentucky on 27 Dec 1879, he was 59. Buried in Gibson Family Cemetery near Gwendolyns' place, KY.  (Picture of his tombstone left.

On 21 May 1839 when Constant Oglesby was 18, he married Mary Bertha (Polly) GIBSON, daughter of Meredith GIBSON & Hannah MORSHEAD OR MOORE. Born in 1820.

Per the notice on right:
The South Kentuckian
Cha M. Meacham Editor
Hopkinsville, Jan 6, 1880
Crofton

Mr. C. O. Ratcliff, an old and respected citizen, died very suddenly at his residence, near here, last Saturday.

My Note:  January 6, 1880 was a Tuesday, so last Saturday would have been January 3rd when he died.

In the 1870 Christian County Census Constant's family is listed as follows:

Ratcliffe Constant 49    (1801) KY
  Mary (Gibson) 52    (1799) KY
  Hannah T. 18    (1832) KY
  Pitman W. 13    (1837) KY
Crable Wilson 6      (1844) KY
Helm Lycurgus 3    (1847) KY

Now, who is Wilson Crable and Lycurgus Helm?  Possible answers:  Caroline America Ratcliffe, sister of Constant born 1842, married William Crable, January 9, 1859 when she was 17 yrs old in Robertson County, TN.  So this Wilson Crable is I'm sure a son of hers, but where are she and her husband and any other children they had?

I do not know who Lycurgus Helm is, but a photo of this Frank Wilhelm was passed down in the family, is this him?  Or one of his descendants?

Two doors down from Constant and Mary are Nancy Lindley and Jonathan Gilkey with their children, Jonathan J., William, and Jacob.  Nancy Lindley was daughter of Thomas Lindley and Elizabeth Gibson, and sister to Mary Polly Lindley, Lucy Clementine Lynn's Aunt through her mother, Mary Polly Lindley.  Ten houses down are John A. B. Ratliff and Lucy Clementine Lynn with their children Lucy, Ulysses, Ada and infant.  John is Constant's son.  Next door is a John W. Gilkey, a relative of the Gilkey that married the Lindley above no doubt and next door to them are Pitman T. Gibson, James Sizemore and Lucy Lindley.  Lucy was also a daughter of Thomas Lindley and Elizabeth Gibson and she married James Sizemore.  Both Lucy and James are buried in the Ratliff cemetery, James is pictured in this paragraph on the left.

John A. B. Ratliff and Lucy Clementine Lynn had the following children:

i.

John Aurelius Byron Ratcliffe (1840-1895) (our line); my maternal gr gr grandfather

ii. Caroline America Ratcliffe, born 1842, married William Crable, January 9, 1859, Robertson County, TN.  I can't find this family in Christian County, perhaps they remained in Tennessee??
iii. Kirk Ratcliffe, born 1842 (it is possible that "Kirk" and Lysurgus are one and the same.)
iv. Sycurgus Ratcliffe, born 1847
v.
Loussign (Nancy) Ratcliffe (1845-1915) (in Tennessee.  She married John Wiggins.  This is Kelley's line.

vii. Jesse Ratcliffe, born 1851, (Colonel Starling was shot and killed by Jesse Ratcliffe in the excitement of a campaign while he was a Republican candidate for Sheriff, June 12, 1880.)  Jesse married a Miss. Enoge abt 1870.
viii. Hannah Victoria Ratcliffe, born 1852, according to the 1860 Logan County census where she was listed as 8 yrs old.  She married Tim Hammond.
ix. Pitman Ratcliffe, born 1852 or 54, married Judy Sizemore.  See the obituary of their daughter, Vera Ratcliffe .  Vera  married an "Adams" as she is noted for having a son, James Adams in Christian county, KY birth records:  ADAMS JAMES -CRSTN -RATLIFF VERA -3-15-1915; in her obit it states she had two sisters, Pearl and Ora.  Her son, James, resided in Louisana.  Pearl's daughter's obit is below.
